Authenticity for the Rest of Us
This chosen group of poems gives examples of contrast between appearance and reality. We learn that appearances can greatly deviate from what is hidden on the inside. Through the use of irony, we also learn the virtues of authenticity. Appearance versus reality is exhibited in “Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Robinson through the use of visually stimulating words to evoke various feelings in us. In E E Cummings’s “Buffalo Bill’s, the speaker admires Buffalo Bill's shooting skills and good looks. He also admires his “watersmoothsilver” horse. Admiration is preceded, however, by irony and followed by sarcasm depending on our interpretation. The dark humor of R.S. Gwynn’s "Scenes from the Playroom" tells the story of a day in the life of an affluent family. But are we getting the whole story? Or just a “scene” as the title suggests. Last but not least, “I’m nobody! Who are you?” by Emily Dickinson, simplicity and authenticity are shown through her use of tone in that is playful and comical. We no longer have to hide our authentic self away. Emily wants us to come out and play. Come be a nobody, even if you are a somebody in the world. Only a frog worries about life in the bog. Robinson also makes use of irony in "Richard Cory," enabling us to understand the truth of Cory's existence that of a sad man, no better than any of those "on the pavement." Richard Cory looked like a true gentleman and that everyone in the town would look up to him with respect and admiration. He talked in a polite manner and was well dressed with bright jewelry that would shine from a distance. People said that Richard Cory was richer than a King. The narrator of the poem must have belonged to the lower class and grew jealous of Richard Cory; he wanted to be him. It was a difficult time for working class people and all they could earn for their family was the bread and no meat with it. Days went by and one night, Richard Cory shot himself to death to

    Mrs. Hawks English CP 1 10 April 2012 Imagery by Edwin Arlington Robinson Edwin Arlington Robinson was born in Head Tide, Maine on December 22, 1869. He moved to a town named Gardiner where he grew up; the town later provided the model for a series of poems that he wrote throughout his career as a poet (Peschel). Robinson attended Harvard from 1891 to 1893 even though his parents were against going to a school of higher value for the education. President Theodore Roosevelt helped Robinson get a job at the New York Custom House as a clerk in 1905. There, he realized his true passion in life was writing (Scott). Robinson became the first major American poet of the twentieth century, “unique in that he devoted his life to poetry and willingly paid the price in poverty and obscurity” (Peschel). He was a great poet and could use metaphors to enable the reader to be able to picture his characters and scenes in their minds. Many of Robinson’s works follow the same patterns. He describes his characters personality through adjectives of the person or of the setting. Edwin Arlington Robinson’s poems “Miniver Cheevy”, “Charles Carville’s Eyes”, and “Richard Cory” use imagery to create men who are not satisfied with themselves. Imagery is “the formation of mental images, figures, or likenesses of things, or of such images collectively.” or “pictorial images and mental images” (Quinn). Edwin Arlington Robinson usually doesn’t use imagery from the natural world, but if or when he does, the images are functional and are made from metaphors and symbolic…

    Arguably the most popular poet in America, Billy Collins provides readers with two types of poetry that is nothing like typical poetry. One of his unique styles is writing as if the poem could be read like a novel. The other type brings humor and whimsy to his work, yet he hints at a seriousness that lies beneath the surface. Both styles of poetry are easy to read, but take a second look to realize what the Collins is intending the reader to understand. Billy Collins is an exceptionally talented poet whose writing at first can be taken to be a simple comedy but when read more carefully, it can be interpreted as a far more complex script. First readings of the poems I Chop Some Parsley While Listening To Art Blakey's Version Of Three Blind Mice, Victorias Secret, and Shoveling Snow with Buddha might convince the reader that Collins is offering poems that are clever yet easy to read and understand. A quick reading of Collins poems shows a similarity of his witty style, although the subject matter of each is different.First glance readings of these poems might lead readers to the following interpretations. A man wasting his time flipping through the pages of a Victorias Secret magazine. A man shoveling snow from a driveway with Buddha. Lastly, a man daydreaming about the childrens rhyme Three Blind Mice. However, if these poems are read more carefully they reveal a hidden richness in their meanings. In the first reading of the poem Victorias Secret, the narrator is flipping through the pages of a lingerie magazine. He describes the outfits of the eight models in great detail. For example, wearing a deeply scalloped / flame-stitched halter top / with padded push-up styling / and easy side-zip tap pants.     E. E. Cummings’s poem “anyone lived in a pretty how town” is about a small town filled with people caught up in going through the motions. The protagonist is a man referred to as “anyone” who is different from the other townspeople. People shun him for his individualism. Cummings throughout the entire poem is stressing the importance of people being unique in their own way instead of conforming to others’ ideas. His sidekick and lover is “noone,” the heroine of the story who loves “anyone” dearly. The children of the town at first can see “anyone’s” loving nature, but as they begin to grow up, they began to fear and despise him, like their parents.     Phoebe Cary may have been a poet ahead of her time; her witty, almost sarcastic, tone is definitely appreciated more today, where good irony and sharp humor is increasingly appreciated.     “Richard Cory” written by Edwin Arlington Robinson is about a man who appears to be admirable on the exterior but no one is familiar with his interior, which is suffering badly. The narrator talks Richard Cory up by stating, he was "richer than a king,"(line 9) "admirably schooled,"(line 10) "we thought that he was everything to make us wish that we were in his place."(lines 11-12) Until an abrupt ending to the poem, "one calm summer night, went home and put a bullet through his head."(lines 15-16) This poem makes one think about true happiness and what it entails. From the outside one may appear to have everything but happiness does not come from wealth, it comes from within ones self and the narrator didn't take the time to really get to know Richard Cory enough to observe his inner thoughts.     The use of imagery and figurative language also support the theme of individuality, as we begin to understand the characters. Imagery is the main focus in Dickinson's “I'm Nobody, Who Are You?”.The use of imagery makes the reader feel more special, more unique. She is comparing herself to a frog in a bog it makes us “the readers” to feel like we are right there with her. The speaker feels connected to the other “Nobody” because the other “Nobody” doesn't care what others think. She wants to be herself and does not want to be noticed, but wants to be herself.
