Authentic Nurse-Patient Relationship
Distal nursing can cause nurses to lose the authentic nurse-patient relationship, which is considered essential and depends on a nurse’s proximity to her patients (Malone, 2003). I personally have seen that even simple technology such as the common check-box computerized documentation rather than handwritten narratives decrease nursing proximity and the relationship that comes with it. While the check-box system can be used in a non-computerized manner, in my experience I have not seen this. Another problem with having our documentation electronically is that there is potential for breaching confidentiality and ways for people to hack into patient information. If there happens to be a breach in confidentiality it can start to weaken the trust
