Current Issues in Education
Introduction
There are a number of critical issues and controversies in K-12 education today. While there is always room for improvement, the federal and state education departments are continuously developing plans and mandates to make necessary changes. In America, education is available to all, no matter ability or disability or socioeconomic status. The public education system in the United States allows people of diverse backgrounds to come together. However, the educational system in America also suffers many problems, and some believe the quality of education is declining. It is difficult to maintain classrooms conducive to learning. The federal government and state governments both attempt to alleviate some of the issues faced in education. These problems must first be identified in order to be improved. Three critical issues that currently exist in education include high stakes testing, common core curriculum, and the use of social media.
High Stakes Testing Standardized tests are used throughout the country to measure student learning. High stakes tests are those used to measure students’ successes and failures. In the United States, high stakes tests are used for accountability purposes. These tests measure the success or failure of a school as a whole. High stakes tests have been a concern for America’s educational system for over a decade. Because teacher and student accountability is based on these tests, it is important that they measure what they are supposed to measure. Tests should be carefully built and implemented for specific purposes. The board of education should not consider the results of only one test to determine whether or not a student has achieved mastery of the standards. Tests also should be aligned to the state’s core curriculum (Carpenter, 2001). The government has implemented

    People who advocate for standardized tests say they are inclusive and non-discriminatory because they ensure content is equivalent for all students. Lelac Almagor, who advocates for the positives, standardized testing, wrote an article titled “The Good in Standardized Testing,” in the Boston Review. Almagor writes that “[T]esting doesn’t produce the staggering gaps in performance between privileged and unprivileged students… [t]esting only seeks to tell the truth about those gaps.” I appreciate the commitment of these teachers who find new ways to prep kids for standardized tests, rather than complain and not teach the kids.…

    In Kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high school and university, millions of students are herded through the same education system independent of their differing levels of intelligence and skills. The limited funds put into the education system are spent on providing a generalized education, which is geared towards moving everyone through the system that inevitably hurts both the academically and non-academically oriented.     High stakes testing is doing more damage than good for our children. High stakes testing doesn’t help students succeed because teachers focus on “teaching to the test”. The No Child Left behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) are annual reading and mathematics tests that is required for students in elementary to high school level. Schools are required to meet the state proficiency standards in order to get federal funds for needed improvements. If standards are not met then the funds will be withheld.     Since the early 60’s varying attempts have been made to improve the education system of America. After the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law was passed in 2002, all students in public schools started to get tested and the results were used to measure the success of the school and district. “High-stakes testing, by its very definition, is the most extreme form of testing, for it results in the most direct, far-reaching set of consequences for the test taker. Thus, high-stakes testing bears great significance for human achievements, individual lives and educational practices alike ” (Ydesen, p, 98, 2014). A state-wide or national standardized test is usually used for this form of testing. Today the main purpose for high-stakes testing is to evaluate the schools, teachers, and students and to hold them accountable for the education being provided and learned. Over 25 states use the results of these tests to make decisions regarding the education system. If the results are found to be positive and/or showing improvements the schools are rewarded financially, but if the results are negative, showing a lack of improvement, the schools could be closed down.     In our case “Faculty Empowerment & the Changing University Environment” we came across two separate subjects both of which our group can relate to and both of which correlate to each other. In the beginning we reviewed the topic of nowadays Universities and what has changed recently and how such change might have affected administrational structure on empowering faculty. We used the data provided to us in the case study to determine the following facts. First, Universities Environment has drastically changed during the last 6 years. Because of the rapidly changing workplace environment, downfall of the economy and incredible technological improvements all caused a lot of adults coming back to school to continue their education or even start over. Universities had to take under consideration the various factors as well as make several adjustments to their educational structure. Few of the many factors are; adult learners have quiet different needs then traditional students, often come with variety of work experience, major news events may create intense student interest in a course-related topic, more time might need to be allocated to some topics and not others, work schedules might require a more flexible educational structure. All of these factors facilitated a development of number of on-line educational colleges and programs to accommodate adult learners, as well in a lot of cases military personnel. The trend of online education has accelerated and enabled students with tough working schedules or in distant locations to take classes online. This in many cases has resulted in standardization of courses and instructional methods which directly reduced the traditional empowerment of instructors.…
