Austin Blake Descriptive Writing
“Bro these guys are huge! We are about to get beat so bad. And look how fast they are.” Austin Blake was usually never intimidated. As the captain of the defense he was generally so stoic you would have thought there was no one he couldn’t beat. His attitude always inspired confidence and tenacity in us. He was our fearless leader. But today it seemed as if his lack of confidence was just a foreshadowing of yet another total mental and physical collapse of a team in the face of Westwood High school. Oh how I hated Westwood High School. The school that embodied scholastic excellence was also said to be the best high school football program in Central Texas. To me it seemed so unfair. How could they be good at everything? Where did we fit in? …show more content…
In this heightened sense of anticipation, I can feel more, I can smell me, I can hear more, I can even see more. I can feel the weight of my pads. The sweat on the cushions, and how they seem to cool my chest and my back. This wet feeling would usually be uncomfortable, but in this moment being uncomfortable doesn’t matter. I can smell aroma of the burgers and hot dogs being sold just outside the stadium. The smell would usually trigger some kind of hunger in my stomach, but in this moment my stomach doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is my mind and my muscles, and beating Westwood. I can hear the fans on both sides cheering. Some cheer for the undefeated Westwood and some cheer for us, the underdogs. But for some reason those cheers don’t excite me. All the cheering doesn’t matter; I find my excitement in this. My excitement is in the start of this game, my excitement is in us doing what “can’t” be done. My excitement is in beating Westwood. And finally I can see them. I can see the Westwood players. They are big, in fact much bigger than us. What do these guys eat? That doesn’t matter right now. Their size, that too means nothing. What matters is beating

Outside the Coliseum is the diehard, devoted fan base. At 7 am the parking lot is filled with diehard fans that come early to tailgate prior to the game. As you make your way to the entrance of the Coliseum the spices and smell of perfectly seasoned food attacks your senses. You can’t help but notice the camaraderie and friendships formed while the alcohol flows. It is in the parking lot you see the dedication and years of loyalty displayed by its fans. In the front row nearest to the stadium stands the most dedicated fan. An older man, scruffy looking stands next to his Winnebago. He is dressed in the traditional garbs for the day. His Winnebago is covered from front to back in Cardinal and Gold; from his speakers blares the schools song ‘Fight On’. Walking by he gives you the greeting of the day ‘Fight on’ and talks about the upcoming slaughter that is to commence…

One cool, September afternoon, I stood in a hotel parking lot with 200 of my closest friends, in an unfamiliar state. Charter buses sat in the background with window paint announcing our arrival in a loud, “JAGUAR PRIDE!” The sun rose on the horizon, scattering blues and pinks across our faces. We were divided into two groups, the larger stood not twenty feet away doing breathing exercises and stretches, the smaller divided into its own groups, both of which battling the wind and the sun; the elements acting against us. We warmed up and we fought the elements, but there was always someone reminding us, “Savor this moment, this is what we’re here for.” Before we knew it, we were standing at the gates of Welcome Stadium, waiting, hearts pumping, minds reeling, some of us numb, for our chance to show Dayton what the Jaguar Pride was made of. We took the field, and everything that could have gone wrong, did. Our sound system crashed, we couldn’t hear the pit playing the opening, and we couldn’t see the drum majors giving us the count off, because we were stuffed into formation…

In the distance, a roar of the opposing crowd commenced as the band began to shout their fight song. The white jerseys swarmed together to celebrate, while faint shadows walked up the home stands and to their cars in disappointment. The pit in my stomach only got bigger as I thought about all that I had given this game whether it was the grueling track workouts every summer, the demanding practices, or the strenuous nine months of rehab I went through just to strap up my helmet again. It was at this moment - as the salty taste of my sweat and tears dripped into my mouth - that I knew how much I loved this game and how much I would miss everything about…

The moment I walked in the arena I get this sweet fresh ice old air that string my nostrils which I can only smell it every time I come to this place. Also I can feel the air conditioner blasting as my skin gets goose bumps throughout the whole arena. As I continue to walk down the hall I smell fresh popcorn popping as it fills the hall with its beautiful aroma and the odor of cheesy nachos making me hungry every step I take. I could not resist the scent, so I bought my self a bucket of lager buttery popcorn and a greasy hotdog to fill my empty stomach. As we keep on walking we get the booze stand and order a around of Jameson Whiskey shots and one expensive cold beer condensation outer part of the cup filled with Dos Equis that was 12 dollars. The game is about to start so we rushed to our seats.…

It’s game day, and the first time in twenty-three years that we might be able to defeat out school rivals, Turpin. But something didn’t feel like it should, after all it was the biggest day our team’s season. We had immense confidence in ourselves, being the higher raked state team, we expected to win this game then make a large tournament run. Little did we know that the rest of our season relied heavily on this game. Winning or losing this game would not end our season physically, but would emotionally ruin us, ultimately ending our season. The game began with a pleasant, almost soothing blow of the whistle and ended with the blood-curtailing screech of the referee’s dagger, sending shivers down my spin. The roar of our crowd stopped and…

Station Camp was five yards from the end zone when our defense flattened the running back, sending the football to the hands of the tackler. Our defense scored on that play to win the game 26-20 in overtime. The tumultuous crowd became so loud, we couldn't hear each other on the field; but truthfully, we did not need to speak. Who we were spoke so loudly that we did not need to hear each other. Numerous predictions claimed we should have lost that game alongside our already fearful fans. After losing nineteen talented starters in the class above us, an immense void was left to fill by few seniors. So why did we keep playing? The answer is that the visceral integrity ingrained within us would never allow us cease believing in ourselves and let adversity control the outcome of the game.…

The next week I went into it thinking I was the best quarterback in the world. I thought the next game would be a cakewalk. I was wrong. We ended up losing by 21. What my coach said to me the previous week was one of the most important things I could’ve learned. Keep your cool and don’t underestimate your opponent. I took these words to heart and, just like that, the team started running on all cylinders again. We won 10 straight and found ourselves in the CIF Semi-finals. We were up against a team that was regarded as one of the best in all of California, but my team remained…

All I hear is parents screaming, teammates awaiting the time when we jog out onto the brick chip field, and our coach telling us where we are going to play and how he wants us to work our butts off trying to win. I smell the popcorn, nachos, pretzels, and mostly what I smell is sweat mixed with a dingy dirt. I’m thinking in my mind, “We all have to give it our all to win the game.” So I put on my dirt crusted, sweat smelling glove on and hustle out to the red brick chipped field.…

He sits on the steps in front of his brown house. One foot on the sidewalk the other leg bent at the knee. The orange glow of his cigarette held inches from his yellowing teeth. From inside the house he hears shouting. He stands, his light washed jeans are worn down at the knees. He stubs the cigarette in green ceramic ashtray on top of the wooden banister. Taking out a lighter, he walks over to his car. Placing one foot on the gray rear bumper, he lights a second cigarette. The luminescent street light overhead hardly reaches him. Given the time of night, light comes from above leaving his face to look unequivocally gray. Silently, he stands for a moment; his eyes tracking each car that passes with minimal interest.…

The hype around the game made it seem to be bigger than just a high school junior varsity game.
