My Great Aunt and Ganong’s Chocolates
Grade 6
The phone call came the evening of June 27, 2016 from my cousin Mary in Alberta, Canada. My grandfather’s sister and only sibling and my Great Aunt Dorothy had just passed away at age 96. Aunt Dorothy had been in Alberta for several years after visiting Mary’s family at Christmas and becoming ill. She greatly missed her home in Ottawa where she and Uncle Bob had lived and raised their three children, Debbie, Mary, and Jimmy.
I remembered visiting my great aunt in Ottawa when I was eight. My twin, Michael and I had fun helping Aunt Dorothy with her walker and eating at the long table in the common dining room. After dinner, Aunt Dorothy passed around a box of Ganong's Chocolates, her favorite. They were made in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada where she and my grandfather were born and grew up. …show more content…
Extended family living all over the world were coming to Ottawa. Yet, our family was not going to be there. My mom was required to be at work for a special hearing. She had to tell our favorite cousin Debbie that ‘unless there was a miracle, we could not attend.’ Debbie replied, “my mother cannot be laid to rest unless her beloved niece is there. But, I know you will make the right decision, either way.” We prayed for a miracle. At the last possible moment, the hearing was cancelled. We got our miracle! My mom was free to leave town. Arrangements were quickly made for the trip to Canada. My mom, dad, two brothers, and I drove to Ottawa on Friday July 28th. My mom decided to surprise Debbie.
Prior to the funeral, my mom had ordered a special gift basket of chocolates from Ganong’s Chocolate Factory. The basket would be delivered to Debbie at the funeral home with the message, “No meal was ever complete at Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Bob’s home until the box of Ganong’s Chocolates was shared.
