The paintings “The Lifeline” by Winslow Homer and “Prairie on Fire” by Charles Deas are two paintings that really struck out to me as similar. I think Homer’s painting, “The Lifeline”, is a very dramatic painting because of how the lady is just laying there passed out while this brave man is swinging across dangerous waves and rocks to get them to safety. Its very different from looking at in class because you can actually see the texture and brush strokes the artist used. When standing in front of a painting, it almost feels like your there watching this happen. You can see all the different details from the small brush strokes to the large ones, and the effect of light almost makes them look like they are glistening. I selected Charles Deas painting to compare to Homer’s painting because in both paintings a woman is passed out and is…

Impressionism started out in Paris around the 1860's, it is often referred to as one of the first modern painting movements. It started in Europe but quickly caught on and spread to the United States. The painting that started the movement was a painting by Claude Monet, Impressionism: Sunrise, this particular piece by Monet, was the first of its kind. This new style of painting allowed the artists to take their work outdoors, this allowed them to create more realistic landscapes and actually experience many of the elements they were trying to portray. Impressionist paintings put an emphasis on the visual sensations and were a more accurate portrait of what the artist was actually seeing and experiencing. Different painting techniques…

The whole painting does not have clear or strict lines, shapes and edges because these are characteristics of the impressionism painting. The first similarity between the two paintings is the noticeable roughness in the application of paint on both. The brush strokes are visible and everything is not perfectly smoothed as it may have been before the impressionist era. In Cezanne's painting, the brushstrokes are thick and short, applying a heavy layer of paint that can be noticed even on a picture. Gauguin's painting on the other hand, contrasts with thinly applied paint. Here, in most places the paint is smoother and forms flatter swaths of color.…
