August Pullman Quotes
August’s experience in the book Wonder was a positive and a necessary journey in his life. In the story August Pullman goes through bullying, betrayal, friendship.
This quote from Wonder, ”I did notice as I walked that Amos had stayed right next to me. And Jack was close on the other side of me. And Miles was in front of us and Henry was in the back of us… I had my own emperor’s guard.” This shows that people can be friends and don’t have to be complete imbeciles like Eddie and his friends in part 8. It also showed that Auggie does have more friends “on his side” than he thought. August is very brave for a 11 year old child with facial deformities. This quote shows his bravery and loyalty to his friends. “Look,” I said, stepping in front

The most important thing this book showed me that even though these children have disabilities they don’t let that stop them from being like any other child. These kids have so much motivation to do the camp activities even though it would be difficult for them due to their handicap. Even though Spider had no arms or legs, he is an incredible swimmer. Jones’ Acorn People showed him that they are capable of accomplishing much more than anyone, including himself, thought they ever could.…

The character I selected from Walk Two Moons was Sal . This character is important in the text because she is ornery and hopeful. This trait contributed to the novel, when she came back to her house and asked her dad about margaret her dad was happy but when he started to explain she cut him off because he said that mrs cadaver was not a murderer. In addition she is hopeful because she wants to bring her mom home from lewiston idaho. For example, she starts the car and drives from coeur d'alene to lewiston idaho.…

“Fear not your enemies, for they can only kill you...Fear not your friends, for they can only betray you...Fear only the indifferent who permit the killers and betrayers to walk safely on the earth” - Edward Yashinsky. Edward Yashinsky was a Yiddish poet of the early 20th century. While enduring the pains of the Communist concentration he was forced into, he was inspired to write the quote that was previously mentioned. Being subjected to the hunger, thirst, exhaustion, and physical beating from the Nazis, he died in the camp. Him and the millions of others who died for their Jewish religion still live in the hearts and minds of millions more today.…

"Yes the motherfucker looks so deadly it makes me giggle and blush." (155) Weapons play an important role in war. Not only do they protect and kill, but they provide a feeling of comfort to a soldier because the soldiers are in control of their weapons. During the Gulf War in Iraq, soldiers were excited by their deadly weapons as described in the pervious quote. In the book Jarhead, a memoir by Anthony Swafford, soldiers have intense relationships with their weapons. Swafford constantly describes the many guns he carries, the process of cleaning his weapons and how they use them. Swafford's fear of dying triggers his obsession with weapons because they are the only aspect of the war he can control to stay alive. Even after the war is…

Year of Wonders, a novel written by Geraldine Brooks provides the reader with a true insight into the fabric of human nature and demonstrates how crisis can expose many new characteristics about the people we think we have formed close bonds with. After discovering Elinor’s past sins in the ‘Poppies of Lethe’, Anna comments on how oblivious of people’s true attributes and past experiences we can be, which reveals ‘how little we know… of the people we live amongst’. This revelation suggests that throughout times of crisis the way people respond and react will differ between individuals and possibly reveal an incident from their past which has resulted in a person’s personality and characteristics. This is evident in the narrative as Elinor’s ‘gentlewomen’ façade is revealed to be exactly that. It is also illustrated by John Gordon who turned into a self-harming, flagellant in an attempt to cope with the catastrophic effects of the plague. In the case of the Bont clan, their already horrid nature is amplified even more so, to an…

To Kill a Mockingbird is a historical fiction written by Harper Lee. Scout, the protagonist and narrator grows into the ability to see events and ideals from the perspective of others as the book goes on. Atticus says and tries to teach Scout that one cannot understand someone unless one considers things from their point of view. Atticus shows this by living a thoughtful and not biased life. For example, the way he treats Tom Robinson during his conviction and also the entire black community of Maycomb, Alabama. Scout is able to see the true personalities of Dolphus Raymond and Boo Radley by seeing things from their perspectives, instead of seeing them by the stereotypes placed upon them. This book is told from the point of view of Scout,…

In Wonder by R.J Palacio we follow the journey of August Pullman who has a very rare genetic deformity. In this essay I discussed the point of view of Jack, Summer and Via. These characters are all very nice to August. The message that the author is trying to get across in this book is that it’s about what people are like on the inside not the outside and you should accept it if people are physically different to…

“He brought the wide world with him” Anna Frith admires George Viccars for being well-travelled but does not realise that he has brought not only his knowledge of the world but also the perils of disease with him. Silhouetted against the sepulchral backdrop of the blighted Eyam, Geraldine Brooks depicts a community caught in extraordinary times in her historical novel “Year of Wonder”. The novel conveys the complications and ramifications of human nature and human actions, interwoven with the cultural value of religion and beliefs in addition to the social value of trust. Brooks illustrates that the nature suspect and distrust has stemmed from the…

Since I’m an organized person I’m going to start with the first quotation that I liked and stood out. “Grandpa had told him some of the same stories when he was a kid, and they weren’t lies, exactly, but exaggerated versions of the truth --- because the story of Grandpa Portman’s children wasn’t a fairy tale at all. It was a horror story.” I was fond of this quote since I feel many people do this when an unpleasant event occurred to them and in some occasions they change the event into something more cheerful. I know that his Grandpa Portman’s stories were real, but this quote actually made me think about how people actually do this when something bad happens to them.…
