PRESENTER: Audrey Hepburn was and still is one of the most influential women in the film industry around the world. In this presentation, I am going to tell you just how far Audrey Hepburn has proven herself in the industry and managed to achieve her ‘Icon’ status as an actress and a humanitarian inspiration.

Audrey Hepburn had the reputation of being a humble and kind person, who never let arrogance boast her ego. She was born into a middle-class family and her mother Baroness Ella van Heemstra, was a Dutch aristocrat descended from the French and English kings. Her father, Victor Hepburn-Ruston who was an Anglo Irish banker, later appended the name

However, in her role for Roman Holiday, she brought something different to the table and played a character who was almost the complete opposite. The character, Ann, a carefree, free minded, easy going and cheerful, was played beautifully by Hepburn and her passion and commitment towards the part showed the industry that she was able to star in films, after already establishing herself in theatre productions. Donald Spoto on Audrey’s performance in Roman Holiday: “She is not a material girl but a mercurial one, a constant nymph who can be royal or sassy, regal or spirited depending on the moment.” (item 5). Hepburn was still undeveloped as a professional actor in 1952: she still had her flaws with acting and struggled with simple tasks such as not being able to cry on demand like many other actors do.
