Audrey Hepburn:
A Hollywood Fairytale

"I am not beautiful. My mother once called me an ugly duckling. But, listed separately I have a few good features."(Woodward 45). Who would have thought this "ugly duckling" would blossom into such a beautiful and talented actress. Audrey Hepburn took a difficult childhood and effortlessly turned it into a gilded fairytale. Early in life Audrey was faced with both social and family oriented conflicts. Her parents fought and in 1938 her father left Audrey and her mother. Audrey recalls the leaving of her father as "‘the most traumatic event in my life. '" As a young child it is difficult to cope with parents arguing and even more emotional damage was brought upon Audrey with the leaving of her father. As a result of her father 's absence Audrey had problems socially. Audrey was teased for her size, the way she spoke, andher shyness. She drowned her emotions in food and as a result she was larger than most children.("Audrey Hepburn Biography" 1). Many would see Audrey 's emotional problems as

Audrey Hepburn's childhood was not one of glitz and glamour. Her father left when she was young, and after that, she and her mother got entangled in World War II. When her parents divorced, her mother moved them to the Netherlands, which was quickly invaded by the Germans (Audrey1). The cruelty heightened when Germany restricted all trade routes that most people received their food from. This caused famine and starvation, and Audrey became malnourished. She even said that she had to "eat tulip bulbs as a source of nutrients" (Backlots). Eventually the country was freed and a branch of UNICEF provided an abundance of food, which is what inspired her to devote her time to…

This film follows our protagonist, Stella (Barbara Stanwyck) through her journey of courtship, marriage to loss. Stella sneaks her way into meeting Stephen Dallas (John Boles) after finding out in a tabloid magazine article about his family fortune being loss and him ending his engagement to Helen (Barbara O’Neil) the socialite. Stella’s complete devotion to her daughter Laurel (Anne Shirley) and her reluctance to change who she is, keeps her from moving to New York with her newly promoted husband Stephen (John Boles). Living separate lives, not completely confessing to the fact that the couple was what would currently be called “legally separated” due to probable censors. The film’s thematic of maternal sacrifice and the loneliness, devotion of the film cause this movie to become what is known in the film industry as a “Weepie”. The Mise-en-scene of the film is predominantly domestic and focused on the excesses of interiors and Stella’s outlandish fashions. The film cannot be categorized as realistic, even though it seems naturalistic at times. The storytelling of Stella’s constant journey to better her life and that of Laurel’s, is purely stylized. Stella’s persona sticks out like a sore thumb against the socialite circles, dressing in the eccentric fashions she deems as stylish, speaking too loud, not fitting into the lady-like deportment her husband demanded.…

Cinderella, directed by Clyde Geronimi, is a movie about a pretty girl who has been made a servant by her ugly stepmother and stepsisters, and deserves a better life. Cinderella is the fairy tale basis for all other movies, in which the underdog prevails against all odds. Ever After, directed by Andy Tehnant, is a movie based on Cinderella. Besides some differences in characters and a change in setting, it has the same good beats evil concept. Maid in Manhattan directed by Wayne Wang is a newer version. It brings motherhood and a difference in ethnicity to the table. Although the servant girl also prevails in this newer version, she does so by working hard at her job and keeping her independence. The article, “Fairy Tales and a Dose of Reality”, by Catherine Orenstein, is about the non-realistic fairy tales that media today still displays. Between picking bachelors and winning game shows, these unrealistic shows give people false perceptions. “Commercialism, Materialism, and the Drive to Fulfill Beauty Ideals in the United States” by Katie Hickey, is an article that discusses some of the media affects on girls. All of these sources deal with the trend of girls trying to become the perfect image. During the process of idealizing the perfect image, many girls suffer psychological problems with themselves and their own body image.…

I see definitely Audrey’s motherhood as the ordinary mother that wants to look like she is the best mom in the world. She pretends to know everything about her son, despite, she doesn’t know anything about him. Her son takes drugs and he sales them at the school although consistently are Audrey’s own medication. For example, when the Gwen Goodyear, the principal of Galer Street, calls Audrey to go to her office to talk in private. Audrey goes into, and she finds out that Kyle (her son) is there. The principal wants to tell Audrey that in the locker of her controversial son was a bottle of medicine. Gwen asks questions about how he could get that bottle. But as a typical mother, she is just defending Kyle with the answer that it was her medicine from the car accident with Bernadette. Audrey just acts and assumes that her son is outstanding and she states, “Now that I write this, I’d like to know what Gwen Goodyear was doing in Kyle’s locker room. Don’t they have locks on them? Isn’t that why they’re called lockers?” (59). Audrey wants to give the impression that is a caring mother and wife. In my point of view, Audrey just wants to socialize and gossip about the other moms in Galer Street, including Bernadette. She is always sending emails to the other moms in the school board. She is pretending that she is helping the school, when actually she is just making gossip around…

Marilyn Monroe, was she perhaps one of the greatest movie stars of all time? We know Marilyn, but who was she underneath it all? Well to start, her name wasn’t always Marilyn, it was Norma Jeane. Her mother, Gladys Baker, was thought to have slight mental health issues that later progressed and made it clear that she was in fact “insane”. Norma Jeane had a childhood that would shape who she became later in life. Yes, she was a great star, but she was also a completely different person. The person her half sister, Bernice, knew was not the same person that the woman walking down the street knew. Norma Jeane…
