Executive summary:
The development of auditing profession in an emerging economy Bangladesh is analyzed here. This report aims to discuss the historical background and evolution of auditing. It is found that auditing has evolved through a number of stages. In the mid 1800s to early 1900s, the audit practice was considered as traditional conformance role of auditing. However, for the past 30 years, the auditor has been playing an enhancing role. Today, auditors are expected not only to increase the believability of the financial statement, but also to provide value-added services. Nevertheless, following extensive reform in various countries as a result of the collapse of big corporations, it is expected that the role of auditors will converge. It is evident that the paradigm about auditing has shifted over the years and it is likely to continue shifting in the future. The first Companies Act in the then British India was enacted in 1850. The Companies Act of 1882 was passed where acts of auditing were imposed. It was not necessary for a company auditor in those times to be accountant himself. The Companies Act, 1913, was passed to be effective as from 1st April, 1914. No person could act as the Auditor of a public limited company unless he held an auditor’s certificate granted by Government. The Government framed Rules under Section 144, of the Companies Act, 1913, called “Auditors Certificate Rules’ 1932”to have control over the profession of accountancy. In 1952, the Registered Accountants formed a private body known as “Pakistan Institute of Accountants” with the objects

    Since the demand for range of non-audit services increases, the need for appropriate supervision and standards for assuring professionalism and especially objectivity in audit services also increases, this study examined the factors affecting the objectivity of internal auditors in the internal audit department, in addition, it is determined if the internal auditors objectivity is affected by the independence of the internal audit activity. Hence, internal auditors are developing new strategies to meet up these challenges and are becoming more practical, providing a broadened variety of services and otherwise changing the internal audit model. This study depends on sample of Banks Operating in the United Arab Emirates. Data is collected from chief audit executive directors whom working in internal audit department of banks. A descriptive statistical methods and regression have been used. The outcome of the study showed that there is a significant positive relationship between the factors in the internal audit department and the objectivity of the internal auditors, such as: rotation of employees, outsourcing audit activities, havening a formal manual, audit charter and quality assurance department. Also the results of the study showed, there is a significant positive relationship between the independence of the internal audit activity and the objectivity of the internal auditors, and this indicated that the internal auditors' objectivity is affected by the degree of the independence of the internal audit activity.…

While business enterprises were comparatively small and were managed by their proprietors there was little need for the development of complex accounting and auditing procedures. When the scale of operation increased and capital was invested in joint stock companies by shareholder who took no part in the management of such companies it became necessary for the managers to present accounts to the shareholders at regular intervals by means of annual accounts.Audits serve a vital economic purpose and play an important role in serving the public interest to strengthen accountability and reinforce trust and confidence in financial reporting. Auditors provide reasonable assurance service to the shareholders by means of expressing an opinion on the financial statements about whether they are reflecting true and fair view of the company. Audit profession, from the very beginning, is providing reliable information to the society hence trying to curtail expectation gap of the society by means of enabling auditing standards and guidelines to the auditors. Audits also provide management with confirmation of excellent performance that can be internally benchmarked by the rest of the organization.
