Atticus, Throughout to Kill a Mockingbird
Atticus, throughout the novel

Throughout the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, although Atticus Finch appears to be a loving and caring father, he proves himself to be more of a friend through the eyes of his children. The author, Harper lee, created Atticus to be a loyal friend to Jem Finch and Scout Finch. Atticus has potential to be a friend to his children because, first of all, the children call him by his first name. Secondly, he seldom scolds his children. Atticus has little or no rules set for his children to abide by. Lastly he does not try to mold his off springs into something they are not, though he does supply them with good advice. Typically adults and parents think that it is more respectful for children, particularly their own, to not call them by their first names. Jem and Scout refer to their father as “Atticus.” Scout asks her father, “Are we poor, Atticus?” (pg. 21) this shows that she calls her father by his first name on a regular basis. Jem says to his father while requesting permission from him, “Atticus, if it’s alright with you….” (pg. 61). This shows that even the older son refers to his father as Atticus. “… Jem asked Atticus if he remembered anybody who ever won…”, as Scout narrates her story, she still refers to her father as “Atticus.” Throughout the story, Atticus never shows any sign of being offended or upset with his children calling him by his first name, like a friend. All through the novel, never once did Atticus scold his children for inappropriate behavior. The Finch’s had over a poor boy, named Walter. Scout insulted him with out understanding how it was rude,“…Atticus shook his head at me again. ‘But he’s gone and drowned his dinner with syrup…’”(p24). All Atticus did was shake his head; he left the rest of the punishing up to Calpurnia, the nanny. When Jem and Scout snuck into the court case that they knew they were not supposed to be in, Atticus did not show the slightest bit of

To show that he wants his children to stand up for what’s right, he leads by example. After finding out that Atticus is going to defend Tom Robinson; a black man, a ruckus is caused in the neighbourhood. Almost everyone is against Atticus standing up for Tom Robinson and a lot of the white community calls him a “nigger-lover.” (83) When Scout questions her father about why he has to defend a black man when the whole county is against it, he says that it was his ethical duty to defend Tom Robinson. It was the right thing to do because Atticus knew that Tom Robinson was wrongly convicted and even though it was almost certain that he would lose the case, it was important to try. “…If I didn’t I couldn’t hold my head up in town (…) or represent this county in the legislature. I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something…

As the father of Jem and Scout, Atticus is a very understanding man. He attempts to teach Jem and Scout as they progress through life and through different events, and is the pillar of support for both children. Atticus is a very wise person, who respects all people around him regardless of what they think of him. He understands that people have their own views and opinions, and while they may be different from his or what he thinks is right, they still deserve to be respected and treated equally. He understands the value of empathy, and how it can be used to understand a person and how the person acts. This can be seen when he attempts to teach Scout about this value, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." p33. Atticus, as a father, teaches Jem and Scout about moral values, and to respect other people no matter the circumstances. Atticus can be continually seen throughout the book attempting to divert Scout from her violent ways, and to never react to another person's actions or words. He displays this quality later in the book when Bob Ewell spits on Atticus' face, yet he calmly walks away from him. These qualities about Atticus develop the reader into feeling respect and admiration for Atticus himself, and tends to focus the reader more upon the words and…

One example would be his style of discipline, meaning that he tries to lead Scout and Jem through a discussion to see what it is that they have done wrong and why it is wrong. As a lawyer, during the case of Tom Robinson, Atticus does all that he could to prove Tom’s innocence’s. Atticus is a good father to both Jem and Scout. During the course of the book Atticus has been blamed to not have been a good father to his children when he allows them to do what most parents would not allow. Such as allowing Scout to wear breeches as it shows “[Scout] could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches; when I said I could do nothing in a dress…” (Lee 83). This shows that people inside the family and outside the family want Scout to act like a lady and do what lady are suppose to be doing, not running around in boy pants. As it said “[Scout] could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches…” (Lee 83), this shows that Atticus is very worry or care much of what she does. Though it may show that Atticus is a bad father…

In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is portrayed as a respected, knowledgeable, and true person. I have a good deal of respect for Atticus Finch, mainly because of his outlook on parenting and basic respect for others. Atticus believes that you truly can't understand someone unless you step into their shoes. "You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view" (Lee 34). This quote shows that Atticus is a caring parent and wants his children to learn that every person is going through their own problems and you mostly don't know all of them. He wants them to know to be kind to others no matter how they act. Atticus wants his children to learn certain lessons through experiences rather than seeing or hearing things. “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do” (Lee 116). Atticus has good parenting morals because he understood that Jem had to go read to Mrs. Dubose to keep her mind off the painkiller. He wanted Jem to be brave and do it, even if he didn’t want to, because then he would truly understand what bravery was. All in all, Atticus is a great father figure and a fantastic parenting model.…

For example when he is busy with Tom Robinson's case and struggles to spend time with his kids. But I guess that was to be expected since he is a lawyer working for one of the craziest cases in his town’s history. Atticus was not a very good father at the time when the hearing was happening because his kids were at the hearing and Calpurnia and Atticus didn’t even know where the kids were. His kids also could have potentially been killed when Bob Ewell was drunk and almost stabbed them but was luckily stopped by Boo Radley. These are all some signs of neglect towards the children but these times were times that Atticus couldn’t really help…

‘With this in mind, I faced Cecil Jacobs in the school yard the next day. “You gonna take that back, boy?”… I would let Atticus down.’ With her pride at stake, Scout was about to get into another fight, but then refrained at the last minute and thought about Atticus. She knew if she continued Atticus would be very disappointed and sad. This encapsulates Scout’s faithfulness to her father; she wanted him to be proud of her. Alternatively, Jem cares for Atticus in a slightly different manner. “Scout, try to not antagonize Aunt, hear?” Atticus’ remarks were still rankling, which made me miss the request in Jem’s question. Jem is aware of what Atticus is going through and doesn’t want Scout, on top of it all, to cause him more distress. During the novel Atticus teaches his and his children to keep their heads up high. He teaches them this because he knows during the Tom Robinson case that people in Maycomb will talk about them and himself. There is evidence to support that this lesson is mostly for scout, because at such a young age she does not understand what the comments mean. This is evident in chapter nine when Cecil Jacobs announces to the class that Atticus defends niggers. The first suggestion of this is when Scout and Jem are walking home from school that day and she asks “What’d he mean sayin’ that?” referring to Cecil’s comment, indicating she did not actually understand his attack, only that it was meant to be hurtful. Later that night she asks Atticus if he defend niggers. This shows that even though she denied the comment made at school, she was not sure if it was true. The third piece of evidence that points to this lesson being mostly for Scout is in chapter 9 when the family is at the Finch Landing for Christmas. While there, her second cousin Francis calls Atticus a “nigger lover”. Later when Uncle Jack comes into talk to Scout about the licking he gave her, she explains that he does not know children and that he was unfair. She tells him that he did not give her a chance to tell her side of the story and that she was provoked into using obscene language and violence when Francis calls Atticus a name. When he asks for the name she answers “A nigger lover. I ain’t very sure what it means but the way Francis said it…” showing again that she does not understand the meaning of these words only that it is meant to attack her.…
