Atticus Finch's Description
The Finches, consisting of Scout, Jem, and Atticus are very well educated. Scout, who started the first grade, already knew how to read, thanks to Atticus and his newspaper. Dill, the children’s summer time friend, used his first words of greeting when they first met, to brag about knowing how to read at the age of seven. Jem responded to him, saying that Scout could read ever since she was a baby. Scout wasn’t looking forward to her first day of school. The imperceptive young teacher from out of town, simply did not understand Maycomb, and told Scout to stop reading at home, something a teacher in the modern world would never say. The Finches are better off than most people, including the fact that Atticus told his children they were poor. They have a nice house, big enough to allow each to have their own bedroom, including a guest room. They also have a dining room, parlor, and a kitchen.
Readers met little Walter Cunningham on Scout’s first day of school. Walter and his family are poor farmers who can’t pay anyone back in money. Instead they pay with the things they find or make on their farm. Mr. Cunningham believes in education, so he sends his son, Walter Jr. to school everyday in freshly cleaned clothes, but no food. Like the Cunninghams’ they are poor, however, they are a step below because they are always dirty. Walter Cunningham always has clean clothes. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, it is stated that the Ewells’ live like animals. They live in an old cabin behind the town garbage dump, their yard filled with junk. They are known throughout the town to only send their children to school one day a year, or the first day of school. This year Scout met Burris Ewell, the dirtiest person she has ever seen, who criticised Ms.
