Different people looked at Atticus as a hero, such as much of the black community in Maycomb. They believe that Atticus is a hero because he defended Tom Robinson. Yet the reality was that Atticus’ defense was doomed from the start. They all knew that he wouldn’t win the case but the thought of him as a hero anyway. They respected him so much that as he left the courtroom “All around us and in the balcony on the opposite wall, the Negroes were getting to their feet.” Also when Jem and Scout went to church almost everybody welcomed them because of what their father did.
A fine quality of Mr. Finch was his accuracy. He earned the nickname One-Shot Finch. This is because he was the best shot in Maycomb. His children were amazed when their neighbor said, “didn’t you know his nickname was Ol’One Shot when he was a boy” Atticus was modest and never bragged to people about this. His children didn’t even know. The only reason they found out was because the sheriff asked him to kill a rabid dog to save the town. The Sheriff asked him to do this because he couldn’t hit the dog as it was to far away.
