(1.1) When researching factors that contribute to the educational process I found this to be made up of 4 categories, the learner, the teacher, the subject matter and the instruction method. Of these 4 I focused on two Individual and 2 environmental factors.

Individual – Motivation
Of all of the factors that can affect how people learn I believe that motivation is one of the most important. “Motivation is something that energises, directs, and sustains behaviour; it gets students moving, points them in a particular direction, and keeps them going” J.E. Ormrod . (2010). How Motivation Affects Learning and Behavior . Available: http://www.education.com/reference/article/motivation-affects-learning-behavior/ Last accessed 14th Oct 2013. Someone who is motivated to learn a particular task or bit of information generally succeeds, even if they have to work long and hard to do so. Learning generally breaks down as the level of interest declines.

Individual - Attention Spans
Attention spans vary among both children and adults. Some people simply prefer to be on the go and have difficulty completing a lesson or task for any length of time. Since the most popular method of teaching requires students to listen and read, often while sitting still, students who have a short attention span might have difficulty learning.

Enviromental - Distractions
Distraction is the divided attention of an individual or group from the chosen object of attention onto the source of distraction. Students learn far quicker when there is a lack of interruption. This many include people moving around, talking, and equipment not working. Students distracted during learning take less in, leading to shortened attention spans and topics being covered multiple times. According to Gloria Mark, a leader in interruption science, “The average

There are many factors that can have an influence on my learning. One of them is my friends. My friends can influence my learning by distracting me during lessons and also by helping me to catch up on work. In some ways, friends can motivate me because they encourage me to do my work and to get my assignments done on time. They also motivate me because they assist me with my work when I need it instead of waiting to ask a tutor which cannot be done as easily; I can easily call a friend. Friends have a positive influence on me because they are aware of the things that I am doing so that they know what I should be working on, mainly because my friends are all doing the same course as me. A negative affect that they have on my learning is sometimes we spend a whole lesson going off topic and talking about what happened on our weekends which is something that can be discussed on the lunch breaks rather than the all important lessons.…

In addition to slow learners, other students don't have the attention span. Most students are required or put into classes that they have no interest in such as the following: U.S. History, Chemistry, or Calculus. These types of classes cram information in about one to two-hour sessions. So putting a student in a class in which they have no interest in would further reduce the attention span. They would most likely be thinking "Oh, this is so boring and I have another fifty minutes of this." Think of a watching a boring movie for two hours. It wouldn't be very interesting. One may promptly day dream or go into La-la land and not recall what they have just watched, or in the…
