Filmic codes assist the viewer in understanding the themes conveyed in feature films. The film Astroboy (2009) was directed by David Bowers, and tells the story of a robot named Astroboy (Astro) who is rejected by his creator. Astro is then forced to find his own identity in a cruel and unfair world. Through the use of technical, written, symbolic and audio codes the film explores a wide range of themes such as environmental destruction, good versus evil, the father/son relationship and equality and inequality.
Environmental destruction is an important and persistent theme shown throughout the film Astroboy, mainly expressed through the use of technical codes. A number of scenes have displayed an inner meaning through technical codes, such as the scene where the Surface and Metro City are compared with an extreme longshot. In this scene, the viewer can tell that there is a large social divide as Metro city is situated directly above the Surface. The extreme longshot used, allows the viewer to see the damage caused by the carless, thoughtless and disrespectful actions of Metro City and its people. This scene is essential because it proves that the Surface is insignificant and is considered as a junk yard through the eyes Metro City.
Good versus evil is one of the main themes explored throughout the entirety of Astroboy, shown by using written codes. One of the few obvious instances was found in the scene where a billboard with candidate Logan on it is knocked over by President Stone. When president Stone knocks over the billboard it shows the he feels the need to be in control, and to be the person with the highest level of power. It also proves that he doesn’t want peaceful person (Logan) to be in control of the city. This scene is vital in the feature film Astroboy as it shows the personalities of both characters, as well as the role that President Stone plays in the film.
The father/son relationship is a theme that is constantly looked at

    A widely-renowned contemporary movie containing multiple themes of apocalyptic literature is “WALL-E”. In this movie, a futuristic dystopian society is presented in which there are no longer any humans present on Earth due to it no longer being sustainable for life. The humans have now been long-removed from Earth and now live on an enlarged spaceship named the “Axiom”, which is funded by the monopolistic company “Buy ‘n’ Large”. Over time, the passengers of the “Axiom” have become morbidly obese, as they have now spent many years having to rely on hove automated systems in order to maneuver and communicate with one another. Therefore, there are many underlying components within this movie that would qualify it as apocalyptic literature. For one, the plot of the movie is “cosmic in scope”, as it depicts the monotonous livelihoods of humans in outer space after having over-polluted the Earth to the point where it is no longer inhabitable. Its “cosmic scope” is also suggested by how manipulative of an effect mass-consumerism will have on the human population, as “Buy ‘n’ Large” holds total ownership over every product that is told to the humans, even in space. Another apocalyptic theme is the user of “satire to shape perception of reality”. In this case, the satire employed in this movie proposes a strong critique of society today by focusing on a multitude of issues such as pollution, consumerism, obesity, and technology. This can be interpreted as the director alluding to the potential “point of no return” that will transpire for humanity if we choose to not address the negative impacts society is having on our environment and well-being. Additionally, there is also a “fellowship of friends against the forces of evil” presented in this film due to the developing relationship between the two robots “WALL-E” and “EVE”.     The biggest-budgeted movie ever produced at Germany's UFA, Fritz Lang's gargantuan Metropolis consumed resources that would have yielded upwards of 20 conventional features, more than half the studio's entire annual production budget. And if it didn't make a profit at the time -- indeed, it nearly bankrupted the studio -- the film added an indelible array of images and ideas to cinema, and has endured across the many decades since its release. Metropolis had many sources of inspiration, including a novel by the director's wife, Thea von Harbou -- who drew on numerous existing science fiction and speculative fiction sources -- and Lang's own reaction to seeing the Manhattan skyline at night for the very first time. There are some obvious debts to H.G. Wells (who felt it "the silliest of films"), but the array of ideas and images can truly be credited to Lang and von Harbou. In the somewhat distant future (some editions say the year 2000, others place it in 2026, and, still others -- including the original Paramount U.S. release -- in 3000 A.D.) the city of Metropolis, with its huge towers and vast wealth, is a playground to a ruling class living in luxury and decadence. They, and the city, are sustained by a much larger population of workers who labor as virtual slaves in the machine halls, moving from their miserable, tenement-like homes to their grim, back-breaking ten-hour shifts and back again.
