Assumptions Of Hester Prynne In The Scarlet Letter
In The Scarlet Letter, the many townsfolk make assumptions about Hester Prynne. They assume that Hester Prynne is not fit to raise her daughter, Pearl, the right way. They make these assumptions against Hester because she wears a scarlet letter upon her bosom, which stands for adulterer. For example, in chapter eight Governor Bellingham brings up the people’s concerns about Hester raising a child. He says, “The point hath been much question concerning thee, of late. The point hath been weightily discussed, whether we, that are of authority and influence, do well discharge our consciences by trusting an immortal soul, such as there is in yonder child, to the guidance of one who hath stumbled and fallen, amid the pitfalls of this world” (Hawthorne, 99). I painted amber on the outside, and blue on the inside to represent the change from negative to positive. Once people get to know you more, they find out who you really are. I also carved my letter out of wood to symbolize strength. You cannot let other people’s judgement towards you bring you down. You have to get back up, and prove them wrong. In a few spots, you can see cracks. These represent scars, both visible and invisible. When people make false assumptions about you, it can hurt. Their assumptions can leave scars, especially emotional ones. My letter also has two lines in the middle, which also represent the change from negative to positive.
My letter “A” has changed from assumptions to acceptance. Once people talk to me, they get to see that their assumptions were wrong. They get to see me for me, and accept me as a person. Just because I am half Mexican, does not mean that I fit the Mexican stereotype of being poor and uneducated. Just because I do not talk much, does not mean that I have no friends, or that I am a loner. They get to see this, and have to accept that their assumptions about me were wrong all
