1. The first poem I chose is From “The Amy Poem” by Farrah Field.
I chose this poem because it challenged my thought processes.
2. Farrah Field is the writer.
Ms. Field was born in Kentucky, but her father was in the Air Force, so her family moved around a lot. Ms. Field states, “I taught in really terrible public schools through the NYC Teaching Fellows program”, she also states that she has since quit teaching and is working on a novel. Her first book of poems “Rising” won the 2007 Levis Poetry Prize.
3. I feel depression is the theme of this poem. She talks about things she has never done and will never do. She talks about being invisible and lost.
4. I feel she is depressed and perhaps contemplating suicide. She talks about things she will never accomplish. She starts to call for help, but changes her mind, when someone calls her, she hits ignore. She states that it doesn’t matter what she wears, no one can see her. She also states that all she has is her discomfort.
5. This is a free verse poem; it has no rhyme or rhythm. It is written as individual sentences with no paragraphs.
6. I have mixed feelings about this poem. I feel sadness and empathy for this person. She is lost in this chaotic world and feels that she has nowhere to turn.
7. The second poem I selected was “Nowhere” by Mathew Buckley Smith.
I picked this poem because although it was short it was very powerful and has a lot of meaning behind it.
8. The writer is Matthew Buckley Smith. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He currently lives in Baltimore, Maryland. He earned his MFA in Poetry from John Hopkins University. He also won the Able Muse Book award in 2011 for “Dirge for an Imaginary World”
9. The theme behind this poem I believe to be grief for his friend who just recently passed away.
10. In the poem he states that he has lost his friend and there isn’t anything he can do about it. His friend’s “machinery
