What things are totally invisible, that is, abstract or symbolic?

What do others make you carry?

What things do you carry that you’d like to put down?

Next create a visual using all the items on your list. Be sure to group these items into categories such as Necessitites, luxuries, things I love concrete things, abstract things, things that make me things I wish I could put down. Highlight three of the most significant weights you carry. Not that these things may represent positive or negative weight.

    The weights are a critical part to the text to help compare physical, emotional and mental weight. O”Brien starts off by describing something as small as a letter from a women name Martha in which First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried. O”Brien uses this letter as a way to give others a visual thought of how something so light can be heavy. He continued to say that soldiers carried things that were determined by necessity which weighted between fifteen and twenty pounds. The transition from light weight to a heavier weight allows readers to project an image that will enable them to compare the different weights. Although the soldiers carried guns and explosives the weight of those things didn’t amount to the mental weight of the things carried in their mind. Among the things the men carried, they also carried “all the emotional baggage of men who might die.”(O”Brien 348) The soldiers had to carry emotions and fear of the thought that other soldiers would die; this weighed on the soldiers mentally. While completing a mission Lieutenant Jimmy mind was clogged with thoughts of Martha as he “gazed at the tunnel,” but his mind wasn’t there and Ted Lavender was killed. While Lieutenant Jimmy was fighting a war physically, he also was fighting a war mentally trying to erase the thoughts of Martha. O”brien states “Lieutenant burned the photos of Martha and the letters she sent, although he felt that he couldn’t burn the blame.” O”Brein wants readers to grasp what emotional weight feels…

    The short story, “The Things They Carried”, by Tim O’brien, was my favorite reading of this week. The author states what the company is carrying, as well as emotional burdens that they carry. I think that theme of this story can be summarized as “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. As I stated in the discussion, I think this story makes a profound point about trauma and emotional stress. Physical burdens are easily observable. For example, when people see someone in a wheelchair their thoughts are most likely automatically sympathetic.     My first victim was my mother I explained to her what memory aid was and how you conducted the class experiment on the students in class. My mother is just like me so she was not very thrilled about the fact that she had to remember information in such short notice. I explained to her that she was not being judged. I started the memory test in a very calm setting which was in my mother's room where she was comfortable. I explained to my mother that I was going to give her a deck of cards. In random format she would need to pick out seven cards. Once she selected the seven cards she had one minute to view the cards in the order that they were selected, and then regurgitate them back to me. Reminder my mother is 52 years old and coincidentally she did very well. Now that I know my mother has very good short-term memory. we have to work on long-term memory, because I always have to remind her of things. I only conducted one memory tests with my mother because she was getting kind of aggravated, and for some odd reason she thought I was making her do my homework. My results with my mother was kind of babbling, because usually my mother act like she cannot hear anything you say. The results were actually the other way around proving that my mother was not telling the truth. Conducting this test on my mother has giving me something to hold over her head in proving that she has selective memory.…
