The second thing I chose to put in my bag are some pictures of my family. I have my grandparents, all my aunts and uncles, my mother and sister, my fiancé and baby, and finally my dog Dori. The reason I chose these pictures to put in my bag is because I couldn’t stress enough how much my family members mean to me. I have had several friends either lose their brother, mother, or even grandparents, and it makes me WANT to cherish every moment with my family and REALIZE that I should. It also makes me thank God for the family that he blessed me with.…

For this assignment, we are going to create an essay, using O'Brien's model, of the things we carry. I expect us to adhere to the techniques of the short story, using the repetition of phrases such as “I carry” and “The things I carry.” The repetition is part of what makes this short story effective. I expect us to use repetition at least 20 times in our essays. Also, with almost every tangible item the soldiers carry, O'Brien tells us how much the item weighs. I expect us to do the same. Obviously don't go weigh items, just take a guess.…

The weights are a critical part to the text to help compare physical, emotional and mental weight. O”Brien starts off by describing something as small as a letter from a women name Martha in which First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried. O”Brien uses this letter as a way to give others a visual thought of how something so light can be heavy. He continued to say that soldiers carried things that were determined by necessity which weighted between fifteen and twenty pounds. The transition from light weight to a heavier weight allows readers to project an image that will enable them to compare the different weights. Although the soldiers carried guns and explosives the weight of those things didn’t amount to the mental weight of the things carried in their mind. Among the things the men carried, they also carried “all the emotional baggage of men who might die.”(O”Brien 348) The soldiers had to carry emotions and fear of the thought that other soldiers would die; this weighed on the soldiers mentally. While completing a mission Lieutenant Jimmy mind was clogged with thoughts of Martha as he “gazed at the tunnel,” but his mind wasn’t there and Ted Lavender was killed. While Lieutenant Jimmy was fighting a war physically, he also was fighting a war mentally trying to erase the thoughts of Martha. O”brien states “Lieutenant burned the photos of Martha and the letters she sent, although he felt that he couldn’t burn the blame.” O”Brein wants readers to grasp what emotional weight feels…

The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines the word "weight" as "a mass or quantity of something taken up and carried, conveyed, or transported." Tim O'Brien's war story The Things They Carried, published in 1990, explores the theme of weight and its importance to men at war in considerable depth. The opening chapter of this book, which was originally written as a short story, is comprised of a collection of lists. O'Brien details for his reader both the physical objects, such as cigarettes, C rations, and packets of Kool-Aid, and the more intangible things, such as fear and silent awe, that weigh these soldiers down. With the amount of space that the author gives to enumerating the weight of these objects, one might assume that these objects are what are really important to these soldiers, but in reality it is the incalculable weight of their spiritual burdens that truly weigh them down.…

The short story, “The Things They Carried”, by Tim O’brien, was my favorite reading of this week. The author states what the company is carrying, as well as emotional burdens that they carry. I think that theme of this story can be summarized as “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. As I stated in the discussion, I think this story makes a profound point about trauma and emotional stress. Physical burdens are easily observable. For example, when people see someone in a wheelchair their thoughts are most likely automatically sympathetic. However, when people see someone having a panic attack they might just assume that the person is overreacting. Nobody knows what emotional burdens someone holds. Therefore, it is wrong to judge people on appearance alone and assume that one knows the full story.…

My first victim was my mother I explained to her what memory aid was and how you conducted the class experiment on the students in class. My mother is just like me so she was not very thrilled about the fact that she had to remember information in such short notice. I explained to her that she was not being judged. I started the memory test in a very calm setting which was in my mother's room where she was comfortable. I explained to my mother that I was going to give her a deck of cards. In random format she would need to pick out seven cards. Once she selected the seven cards she had one minute to view the cards in the order that they were selected, and then regurgitate them back to me. Reminder my mother is 52 years old and coincidentally she did very well. Now that I know my mother has very good short-term memory. we have to work on long-term memory, because I always have to remind her of things. I only conducted one memory tests with my mother because she was getting kind of aggravated, and for some odd reason she thought I was making her do my homework. My results with my mother was kind of babbling, because usually my mother act like she cannot hear anything you say. The results were actually the other way around proving that my mother was not telling the truth. Conducting this test on my mother has giving me something to hold over her head in proving that she has selective memory.…

The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien, is about the experience multiple soldiers go through during the Vietnam War. There are stories about the love, hardships, friendships, and loss all the soldiers go through. By going to war, the soldiers all lose a part of themselves. I believe the message Tim O’Brien is trying to convey in his novel is people who do not go to the war, do not understand what it is like. I think throughout this novel, O’Brien tries his best to give the people who are not a part of the war an opportunity to understand. There are multiple examples throughout, The Things They Carried, demonstrating there is no clear understanding from the people at home for what it is like at war. In addition to the disconnection, Tim…

In the novel The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien the author tells about his experiences in the Vietnam war by telling various war stories. The quote, "It has been said of war that it is a world where the past has a strong grip on the present, where machines seemed sometimes to have more will power than me, where nice boys (girls) were attracted to them, where bodies ruptured and burned and stand, where the evil thing trying to kill you could look disconnecting human and where except in your imagination it was impossible to be heroic." relates to each of his stories.…

War presents a very complex moral dilemma. While it is necessary to fight for freedom, a better world, and what is right, war contradicts itself. The very same soldiers that fight in defense of these values have them taken away because of their experiences at war. The negative effects are just as big as the positive effects of war. A nation can never really win in war because of this. Instead war just stays a neutral thing.…

The excerpt of “The Things They Carried” inspired me to write about minimalism and the burden that excessive amounts of possessions can create and how ultimately it can weigh down an individual’s happiness. It inspired me to write about this topic by listing off all the things the soldiers in the story had to carry and how much each thing weighed. It made me think about how unhappy carrying the heavy equipment might have made each soldier and how unhappy I was with the things weighing me down. To introduce an audience who knew nothing about minimalism I’d introduce them to it by talking about the primary purpose of minimalism. The primary purpose of minimalism is to declutter a person’s life and get rid of unessential things that just end…

Reflecting back upon my table of personal leisure inventory, I can see that I am currently engaged in a lot of physical, health and social leisure activities. Working out at the gym, playing basketball, and dancing are all integral parts of my life and the physical and health benefits I get from them are amazing. All my leisure activities are social benefits as well as each activity I have listed requires me to be social. A couple of my activities also give me cultural benefits as well. Hanging out with friends is a great cultural benefit because depending on which friends you are with you adapt to the culture surrounding them. Or in my case I have a sense of different culture when I am with my friends. Also,…
