Nucleic Acids & Protein Synthesis
(Assignment 1)
Scenario
A local television company has approached you to ask for help producing an educational television program about DNA and protein synthesis. The program will be aired on a week-day evening and will be aimed at teenagers and adults who are interested in popular science. Most of the program will be presented by a guest presenter, however they would like to use students to deliver part of the information. Your role will also involve educating the presenter and crew about aspects of DNA structure.
Task 1
Produce an information sheet about the structures of the nucleic acids – this will be given to members of the production crew. (must include the following nucleic acids DNA, RNA, mRNA, tRNA). (P1) Task 2
Produce a poster for the presenter which clearly explains the relationship between the sequence of bases in DNA and the sequence of amino acids in a protein. (M1)
Task 3
Produce a flow diagram or PowerPoint presentation to explain protein synthesis (D1)
Grading criteria
Criteria ref
To achieve the criteria the evidence must show that the learner is able to:
P1 compare and contrast the structure of various nucleic acids
M1
explain how genetic information can be stored in a sequence of nitrogenous bases in DNA
D1
explain the steps involved in biosynthesis of protein including the roles of RNA
