Assignment 1 Ptlls, Level 4
Assignment 1 - PTLLS - Level 4

Task 1. Establishing ground rules and promoting appropriate behaviour.

Level 4. Explain the different approaches you have discovered for establishing ground rules to value the contributions of others and understand the need for respect?

Ground rules can be agreed as a group or as a class, having a mutual agreement from the class helps establish and promote respect for each other, knowing what is intended from the class and taking responsibility for learning as individuals and as a group, as working as a team and respecting each others opinions, and agreeing to disagree, however still respecting the other person’s opinions. Discussing and agreeing ground rules with the class makes for transparency and openness with the class and individual awareness of this matter. Ideally it may resolve any animosity.

Inclusive learning is about recognizing that each learner is different from other learners in many ways. As a teacher; you need to work in partnership with your learners to ensure that learning is effective. Partnerships always work best when both sides know where they stand. If your learners understand what is required of them and what they can expect from you, they are more likely to make the necessary commitment to learning and to be successful in achieving their aims and ambitions. (Gravells and Simpson 2008, p.21)

Promoting appropriate behaviour so that individuals respect each other and this would also help eradicate bullying style of behaviour. Although, you would think this would not happen with adults, however it does. ‘The know it all’, explaining to the class whilst interrupting teaching, giving too many personal experiences or examples, this can be really frustrating for the learner, who needs to listen and understand the point of the teacher. Once ground rules have been established this would make the individual / class aware of their own behaviour for example ‘only having one conversation at a

Working as an operations trainer for Airline Services Ltd (ASL), my job is to travel around to many of the UK’s major airports to deliver training and development of front line staff. Training within the aviation industry is of critical importance as many of our staff work in a hazardous environment involving live aircraft and heavy machinery. A great deal of the training I deliver is directly related to ASL company operating procedures to ensure that all staff are working to company standards and ensuring their safety and the safety of others. ASL provide a number of services to various major airlines, which range from the very basic (cleaning) to more complex services such as de-icing. The range of complexity in the services that ASL provides, results in a wide range of learner levels, where some staff may find aspects difficult to understand. Within ASL’s workforce there is a great deal of diversity in terms of education level, work experience, age, race, gender and previous knowledge from previous jobs that can make training challenging. It is of huge importance that when delivering training, it is specific to the task that the learner is expected to carry out on a daily basis and at the same time gives them the opportunity to question and discuss aspects of their role openly and not to feel in doubt, criticised or intimidated when voicing their opinion. It is crucial that all staff comply with ASL’s company values of: Quality, Reliability & Performance, (ASL website ref) especially myself during the delivery of training as these values filter throughout the entire company and can make all the difference when securing customer contracts and meeting expectations.…

Inclusive learning is focused teaching on the learner as each individual. It’s making the teaching inclusive for each learner to their requirements and their needs. Not everybody is the same, and each has their own way of learning. You have to identify and remove possible barriers that are going to restrict the learning process, and reduce their participation in the process. We all learn differently; influenced by a combination of post experiences of learning, study practices and our personal approaches to tasks and assignments. As people have different needs and speeds, you teach at the rate of the slowest learner (in a group situation). This means that yes others may be quicker, but they can then look at notes, displays, books etc. and the slowest can catch up. Don’t make people aware that you have a slow learner, repeat yourself, give hand-outs for them to browse at... people get embarrassed, ashamed and low if they think they are holding up the class.…

Before any teaching session begins I would establish some ground rules with each new group of learners. I would explain the reasons for having these and promote discussion about what I expect from them as learners and what they can expect from me as tutor. I would most likely opt for a flip chart to write these down and use this activity to encourage participation by asking the group what they feel is important to them in terms of respect for each others individuality and what they feel is acceptable behaviour, this could include learners writing the groups ideas onto the flip chart or writing their ideas down, collating them and selecting the most appropriate and relevant ones which would then form the basis of an agreement. Examples of ground rules being respecting for each other, turning mobile phones to silent, not interrupting each other and allowing opinions to be expressed, do we allow swearing and if so at what level do we draw the line. Having established these ground rules I would suggest to the group that I draw up an agreement in the form of a list that we all adhere to and can refer to. I would also agree with the group the consequences of infringement of the agreement, this may be in 3 stages, 1 being polite reminder of our agreement, 2 being a discussion in private between myself and the learner and 3 if the infringement continued the learner would be asked to leave the course. This would underpin what the group agree to as appropriate behaviour and that they have set the boundaries and consequences…

There are two types of assessment, formal and informal. When a candidate is being formally assessed, questions may be asked or they may be asked to take a test, the candidate therefore is fully aware of being assessed. During an informal assessment, e.g. during an observation while carrying out their duties, the candidate may not be aware that they are being assessed. A trainer may use a number of different methods in these types of assessment, below are some examples:…

Inclusive learning is about ensuring all your learners have the opportunity to be involved and included in the learning process. It’s also about treating all learners equally and fairly, without directly or indirectly excluding anyone. Inclusion is about attitudes as well as behaviour, as learners can be affected by the words or actions of others. You are not teaching you’re subject to a group of learners who are all the same, but to a group of individuals with different experiences, abilities and needs which should be recognised and respected. Agreeing individual learning plans (ILPs) and/or action plans can help formalise this. Source: Gravells, 2013.…

Ground rules are used to lay down order, responsibility and accepted behaviours amongst learners. Ground rules are used because ‘all learners require boundaries and rules within which to work’ cites Gravells (2010a:7) with which I concur as we all need rules to work within yet they are used for other reasons such as to reduce anxiety. We set ground rules like ‘all to participate’ and ‘constructive criticism only’ to include all learners and to avoid unconstructive replies which may lead to a sense of being bullied.…

Inclusion is about attitudes as well as behaviour, as learners can be affected by the words or actions of others. All learners must feel that they are positively and equally valued and accepted, and that their efforts to learn are recognised, and judged without bias. It is not enough that they are tolerated. They must feel that they and the groups to which they belong (e.g. gender, social-class or attainment groups) are fully and equally accepted and valued by you, and the establishment in which you work’.
