Assignment Overview
For this assignment, you will write a one-and-a-half page paper (double-spaced) on the socalled “Scene of Ovcharovo.” In this paper you will show your ability to describe, analyze, and formulate your own opinion of the function (value, purpose) of valuable archaeological finds in passing on prehistoric myths and messages to future generations.
Learning Outcomes
- Make precise observations while critically describing an authentic complex of prehistoric artifacts - Determine main ideas which might have been woven into it
- Analyze the structure of a supposed myth or a scene of everyday life
- Recognize main prehistoric means for creating and keeping stories alive
- Write a reflection on that specific topic using appropriate language and terms
Instructions
- Observe the Scene of Ovcharovo (see the images below) as a whole and in details carefully
- Try to find the structure this complex of finds may have been built on (groups of similar objects, number of similar elements and how they relate to each other, etc.)

- Describe the symbols (elements of decoration) depicted on the clay objects
- Try to determine sex, age, appearance (tattoos, fabric decoration), status (common people, priests/priestesses, or gods), etc.
- Try to create your own picture about their possible meaning
- Make a brief research on the Internet about some scholars’ suggestions of the meaning of that scene as well as about its discovery and archaeological context (Search key words online like
“scene” + “Ovcharovo”)
- Make final critical notes and draw conclusions about the mythological, religious, or everyday life features of the Scene of Ovcharovo
- Try to find
