The purpose of this thesis is to research how the Zambian Government through the use of the
Zambia Tourist Board can increase awareness of Zambia’s various tourist attractions, its geographical position, and differentiate the country from its competitors as an African tourist destination. The research information was collected by studying theories related to marketing planning.
Personal interviews with Chinese visitors in Zambia, members of staff at the Zambia Tourism
Board, members of staff at the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Natural Resources, the
Association of Chinese Travel Agents and Zambian tour operators were used as the primary source of information. Secondary data was secured from organizational records and data collected through qualitative research. Responses from the questionnaires were analysed using the statistical package for social science programme (SPSS).
The empirical part of the thesis delineates the case company, the new market (China) it is trying to reach and information about marketing strategies for the tourism industry.
The results of this study show that the major factors constraining Chinese tourists’ travel to
Zambia are due to low market awareness. This is because there is little knowledge about
Zambia among the Chinese people and the country’s image in China is not strong and recognizable. The findings of the report are broadly discussed in the

    Zambia was first noticed by Europeans because it had a vibrant copper industry and a well-off economy. The European powers that controlled Zambia used it for its copper revenue and upon gaining its independence it was thought that Zambia would survive in the changing world. When the stubborn copper prices refused to rise Zambia was forced to continue to borrow money and thereby put them more and more into debt.     Over the last few decades, development policy has been dominated by mainstream economic theories that focus on economic growth to achieve sustainable development. The pace and scale of tourism growth in Livingstone (Mosi-oa-Tunya) area in Zambia has seen over reliance on natural resource utilisation by mass tourism developments. Compounded by insufficient planning and limited co-ordination and collaboration among the institutions involved in the tourism sector, tourism can have a negative impact and can create conflicts. Tourism growth in Livingstone (Mosi-oa-Tunya) has predominantly focused on the economic incentives in tourism and ignored the social perspective and impact on the local population. This paper presents an analysis of the challenges of policy and planning implementation towards sustainable tourism development in Zambia. The sample of the study was 85 respondents that were purposely selected. In addition, the opinions of 9 heads of tourism departments and the community were purposefully selected for in-depth interviews. Data was gathered using both questionnaires and interviews. The findings showed tourism planning is a new phenomenon in Zambia. It was found that the factors that emerged as challenges related to priorities of national economic policy. In general, the government agencies administration structure affect the successful implementation of tourism policy and planning for sustainable tourism development.
