Chapter 8:Assessments

1. MAKING GENERALIZATIONS How would you describe the Iroquois people before Hiawatha? After Hiawatha?

Before Hiawatha, the Iroquois lived in longhouses. The men haunted and were warriors who protected the community. Women owned the dwellings, gathered wild plants, and grew crops. They also cooked, made baskets, and cared for the children. Wars were common.
After Hiawatha, an alliance was created of five groups called the Iroquois League. There was a council or representatives. Every Iroquois group was made up of clans. The women of each clan singled out a well-respected woman as the clan mother. The clan mothers then chose the male members of the Grand Council.

2. MAKING CONNECTIONS How was the Aztec nobility similar to the nobility of medieval Europe?
The Aztec and European nobility were similar because nobles from both civilizations formed part of military services and the government.

3. SPECULATING Why might the Nazca have created images so huge that they could only be seen from the air?
Although the exact significance of these lines remains unknown, they might have had religious meaning to the Nazca.

4. IDENTIFYING How did the Inca emperor ensure that newly conquered territories were loyal to him?
The Emperor made the local ruler, from the conquered land, send their children to the Inca capital so they could be educated before going back home.

5. GEOGRAPHY SKILLS What geographical feature allowed the Moche’s economy to flourish?
Moche River. This river flows from the foothills of the Andes into the Pacific Ocean. Farmers in the area grew maize, peanuts, potatoes, and cotton.

6. ECONOMICS Describe the economy of the Inca.
Economy was mainly based on high altitude agriculture when they cultivated corn, potatoes, etc. But it was also based on trade networks for long distances.

7. COMPARE AND CONTRAST Compare and contrast the political characteristics of the Maya, Aztec, and Incan civilizations.
The three civilisations were built during war. The incas sent children to the capital city to encourage loyalty. In the aztec civilisation, male noble children were sent to temple schools for military training. The Maya ruler and Inca emperor claimed to be descendants of God. The three civilisations had nobility and peasants and labor was mandatory.

8. IDENTIFYING CAUSE AND EFFECT How did alliances with other city-states help the Aztec build an empire?
The Aztec leader supported the other rulers in return of tribute. This led to building an empire.

10. ANALYZING VISUALS Knowing that the blue dots represent one year, at what age would Aztec boys learn how to fish?
When they were 14.
11. SYNTHESIZING How does the different educational focus of Aztec boys and girls reflect the different roles of Aztec men and women?
The education focuses on what the boys and girls are going to do when they grow up. The Aztec boys learned fishing, farming and hunting; while the girls learned how to take care of children.

    Aztecs and Mayans are both an ancient civilizations that once both lived in Mexico. The Aztecs lived in the central part of the country and spoke a language called Nahuatl.
