CHAPTER 1
Introduction:
In our place here in Pinagkurtelan, one of the news that we’re hearing is the increasing case of Dengue Victims that bothers us as a people living in the place. Based on the Department of Health (DOH) report they said that 16-percent spike in dengue cases in the country this year. There were already 51,597 cases recorded from Jan. 1 to July 14, according to the DOH National Epidemiology Center’s (NEC) dengue surveillance report. “This is 16.43 percent higher compared to the same period last year, which was 44, 315,” said the NEC. The number of deaths from the dengue virus also rose to 328, which is higher than the 293 cases recorded during the same period last year. Most of the cases centered in Metro Manila with 11,476. This was followed by Calabarzon with 7,265 and Central Luzon with 7,044. I decided to choose this topic about Dengue because I am one of the Dengue victims here in Pandi last August of 2010, I chose to study this because I what to have an idea of how dengue fever strike the Pandienos and to make a positive way to lessen the rate of dengue here in Pandi.
This research project is entitled “Assessment of Dengue Outbreak in Pandi” aims to answer the following: a) Thus the rate of Dengue in Pandi is increasing or decreasing?
Hypothesis 1: (The Dengue cases here in Pandi are increasing because of the rainy season.) b) Thus the geographical location affects the rate of Dengue cases here in Pandi?
Hypothesis 2: (Dengue cases most probably happened in the place where there were many trees and grasses.) c) Thus the sanitation of the environment affects the rate of Dengue cases here in Pandi?
Hypothesis 3: (Most of the Dengue- carrying Mosquito lives in a dumped and isolated area.) d) What would be our action as a people of Pandi to

In the pipeline is a dengue alert website that will enable public health practitioners to check out high-risk areas for dengue outbreaks and come up with early intervention measures. Developed by DOST through its sectoral council, the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), the site is technically a “vector surveillance” tool containing data on population density and other information on Aedes aegypti mosquito which is the vector for dengue, or the organism that transmits the dengue virus to humans.…

In article ‘Dengue, aka “Breakbone Fever”, is back.’ of Slate, it is stated that the primary cause of Dengue is the increase of slums when people go out for work and leave the rural areas. (McKenna, M. 2012, December 21 Paragraph 9). As more and more infrastructures are needed when the population increases, it will create small pools of stagnant liquid which are places that are extremely suitable for Aedes aegypti to grow actively.…

Each type of the dengue virus is re-emerging worldwide, especially in the Western Hemisphere. Research has shown that several factors are contributing to the resurgence of dengue fever such as uncontrolled urbanization, increased international travel, substandard socio-economical conditions, and finally global warming. Global warming has shown to be a major contributor to the spread of dengue fever.…

Ghani et al (2008) conducted a research on the 2006 epidemic of dengue virus at a tertiary care centre in Sindh. The basic reason behind conducting research was to investigate the outcome of a selected group of patients who were either alleged or had been confirmed to be infected with the dengue virus and were being provided treatment at Liaquat Univesity Hospital in Hyderabad. The methodology that was used in this research was that 116 patients were kept under observation as they were being treated for the dengue infection. All relevant tests pertaining to finding out whether a person has dengue were conducted. These tests were like investigating the platelet count of the patient for thrombocytopenia, symptoms recognition like myalgia, high febrility, purpura and dengue antibody recognition etc. The clinical information conducted was also supported with other data gathering such as demographics and the data analysis was done on the SPSS 10.0 software. The findings that were registered indicated that out of 116 patients, only 52 patients had the dengue infection. Almost all of the confirmed cases had indications of thrombocytopenia and leucopenia which are key factors in determining the dengue virus. The mortality rate in this case was that of three deaths.…

Dengue fever, a very old disease, has reemerged in the past 20 years with an expanded geographic distribution of both the viruses and the mosquito vectors, increased epidemic activity, the development of hyperendemicity (the co circulation of multiple serotypes), and the emergence of dengue hemorrhagic fever in new geographic regions. In 1998 this mosquito-borne disease is the most important tropical infectious disease after malaria, with an estimated 100 million cases of dengue fever, 500,000 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever, and 25,000 deaths annually. The reasons for this resurgence and emergence of dengue hemorrhagic fever in the waning years of the 20th century are complex and not fully understood, but demographic, societal, and public health infrastructure changes in the past 30 years have contributed greatly. This paper reviews the changing epidemiology of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever by geographic region, the natural history and transmission cycles, clinical diagnosis of both dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever, serologic and virologic laboratory diagnoses, pathogenesis, surveillance, prevention, and control. A major challenge for public health officials in all tropical areas of the world is to develop and implement sustainable prevention and control programs that will reverse the trend of emergent dengue hemorrhagic fever.…

Leptospirosis and dengue fever are increasingly seen as causes of tropical febrile illness and often are clinically indistinguishable. This two-year prospective study from a tertiary care centre comprised 200 patients including 68 men (mean 34.8 years) with dengue and 73 (mean 46.19 years) with leptospirosis. Oliguria, icterus, muscle tenderness, anaemia, leukocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), acute renal failure (ARF) and hypoalbuminaemia appeared more commonly in leptospirosis in comparison to dengue. Eighteen per cent mortality was observed in leptospirosis compared to one per cent in dengue. ARF, hyperbilirubinaemia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), creatine…

Dengue Fever is caused by one of the four closely related, but antigenically distinct, virus serotypes Dengue type 1, Dengue type 2, Dengue type 3, and Dengue type 4 of the genus Flavivirus and Chikungunya virus. Infection with one of these serotype provides immunity to only that serotype of life, to a person living in a Dengue-endemic area can have more than one Dengue infection during their lifetime. Dengue fever through the four different Dengue serotypes are maintained in the cycle which involves humans and Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito through the transmission of the viruses to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquito becomes infected with the Dengue virus when it bites a person who has Dengue and after a week it can transmit the virus while biting a healthy person. Dengue cannot be transmitted or directly spread from person to person. Aedes aegypti is the most common aedes specie which is a domestic, day-biting mosquito that prefers to feed on humans.…

One geographic mystery in particular has forced some epidemiological detective work. Despite that fact that large populations of dengue-carrying mosquitoes are found in certain parts of the U.S., outbreaks have yet to be detected in some of those locations—and scientists are questioning these patterns. Answers could help avert future outbreaks. More than 2.5 billion people—almost 40 percent of the world's population—are now at risk from dengue, and the World Health Organization currently estimates there may be 50 million to 100 million dengue infections worldwide every year.…
