1a) Outline what is meant by a balanced diet (1.1) A balanced diet is important to maintain health and a sensible body weight. No single food will provide all the essential nutrients that the body needs to be healthy and function efficiently. A balanced diet should contain protein, fats, carbohydrates and fibre in the form of fresh vegetables and fresh fruit, all in the right amounts, providing you with a good supply of essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and of course fresh drinking water. It is essential for a healthy body and a healthy mind. It’s come from five food groups.

1b) Create a poster which gives examples of the effects on health if a diet is not balanced (1.2)

Protein

Proteins function as building blocks for bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. They are also building blocks for enzymes, hormones, and vitamins. Proteins are one of three nutrients that provide calories (the others are fat and carbohydrates).

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates provide your body with energy. The simplest are sugars, like glucose, fructose, sucrose and lactose. Complex carbohydrates, like starch, are made up of lots of sugar molecules joined together. The 'identity tags' (antigens) on the surface of all cells are made from carbohydrates joined to proteins. These molecules are essential for cells to recognise each other and to keep the different parts of your body working together.

Fats

Dietary fats are essential to give your body energy and to support cell growth. They also help protect your organs and help keep your body warm. Fats help your body absorb some nutrients and produce important hormones, too. Your body definitely needs fat.

Calcium

Calcium is a mineral that is necessary for life. In addition to building bones and keeping them healthy, calcium helps our blood clot, nerves send messages and muscles contract. About 99 percent of the calcium in our bodies is in our bones and teeth.

Vitamins

Vitamin very important for our body. Vitamin a eyesight, growth, appetite and taste. Vitamin b1- Nervous system, digestion, muscles, heart, alcohol-damaged nerve tissues.
Vitamin b2- Growth, skin, nails, hair, sensitive lips and tongue, eyesight, the breakdown of protein, fat and carbohydrates etc.

Minerals

Strong bones and teeth, nerve function, muscle contraction, blood clotting, iron- Red blood cells and muscle function, white blood cells and the immune system, Immune system, the breakdown of protein, fat and carbohydrates etc.

1d) Outline at least two ways to inform individuals to eat a balanced diet

A doctor may have already explained the benefits of good nutrition, but the facts may be more meaningful coming from you. The World Health Organization explains that a healthy diet boosts the immune system and reduces the risk of diseases, including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some types of cancer. Eating well can help you maintain a healthy weight and may improve mental health. You can also offer anecdotal encouragement. Tell your friend that a healthy diet has given you more energy, for instance.

Adopting new diet habits can be quite overwhelming. Healthy eating may be more appealing if you can offer easy-to-follow guidelines for meals and snacks. Show your friend the My Plate icon from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Explain that a healthy plate is half fruits and vegetables, one-quarter whole grains and one-quarter protein, with a serving of dairy on the side. Suggest healthy food swaps like air-popped popcorn instead of chips, plain yogurt in place of sour cream and seasonings or herbs instead of salt.
