Before this course, my conception of the roles military officers in society and government had was that they were distinct individuals of a higher moral and ethical caliber. With these values came a voluntary but clear support of their chain of command and mission to defend the citizens of the United States of America. Prior to attending West Point, I observed an awkward separation between members of the armed forced and civilians due to lack of knowledge and familiarity of both worlds. Therefore, while I was aware that…

First, I must choose the harder right. I strongly believe that a good officer is one that is not afraid to go that extra mile to ensure the safety and welfare of the soldiers under his command, this is very rarely easier than just doing the minimum. Secondly, a leader must remain calm in all situations. The soldiers under the command of a nervous and indecisive leader will tend to act in the same way, they actually "inherit" some of the traits that their commanding officer portrays, both on the battlefield and in garrison. If a leader even seems indecisive and unsure of him/her self then the soldiers he/she commands will be hesitant about following the orders they are issued, and hesitation on the battlefield does nothing more than cost lives. Next, I'd like to touch on the fact that in the army talent must be promoted. One should not be afraid to promote officers that have greater aptitude than that they possess. If talent had not been promoted, then Sam Damon would not have been able to create such a positive impact on the Army, and a few more soldiers could have lost their lives in combat.…

My sophomore year was Colonels first year as a high school instructor. I met him the same day I changed my schedule into the class. He was goofy and tried his best to relate to students but always ended up creating a lesson out of every situation. He was very energetic and enthusiastic. By the second semester he knew every cadet by name and by my senior year he didn’t lack energy. He was involved not only in the JROTC program but in all events going on around the school. He was an open book who constantly shared his testimony.…

Gender and race have become the dividing line in many aspects of everyday life to include the division of labor, physical space, and power (Burrell, 1980). In the Military, most successful officers are usually described as forceful, decisive and rational. These qualities have been typically associated with the picture of masculinity. On the other hand, unsuccessful officers are usually defined as weak and indecisive. These terms are usually associated with femininity (Burrell,…

No one is more professional than I. I am a noncommissioned officer, a leader of Soldiers. As a noncommissioned officer, I realize that I am a member of a time-honored corps, which is known as “The Backbone of the Army.” I am proud of the Corps of Noncommissioned Officers and will at all times conduct myself so as to bring credit upon the Corps, the military service, and my country regardless of the situation in which I find myself. I will not use my grade or position to attain pleasure, profit, or personal safety. Competence is my watchword. My two basic responsibilities will always be uppermost in my mind—accomplishment of my mission and the welfare of my Soldiers. I will strive to remain technically and tactically proficient. I am aware of my role as a noncommissioned officer. I will fulfill my responsibilities inherent in that role. All Soldiers are entitled to outstanding leadership; I will provide that leadership. I know my Soldiers, and I will always place their needs above my own. I will communicate consistently with my Soldiers and never leave them uninformed. I will be fair and impartial when recommending both rewards and punishment. Officers of my unit will have maximum time to accomplish their duties; they will not have to accomplish mine. I will earn their respect and confidence as well as that…

Discipline is an essential quality in the law enforcement career. Many people would agree that discipline consists of training, correcting, or helping citizens and oneself to obey the laws and codes of behavior. Discipline brings forth good leadership and courage when dealing with issues in the community and country. For example, Police officers can help the community by patrolling the streets, responding to emergencies, and dealing with members of the public. In addition, discipline is necessary in the work performance. One of the requirements of law enforcement is training. In order to determine whether a candidate has the needed strength and tolerance to do the job of a police officer, they would have to take the physical agility test. Although many people criticize this test, it is critically important because flexibility, strength, and endurance are necessary for the job, or it could result in injury or death of an officer or a citizen. Furthermore, officers are role models to the citizens and should obey the laws as well as codes of behavior. As role models, they have to act properly since they are constantly under review by government agencies: the courts, and the judicial review. In other words, positive role models are necessary to avoid crime from increasing. In conclusion, discipline is the key of being successful as a law enforcement officer.…
