Using the friction caused from rubbing clothing against rocks, and rinsing the clothes in a stream in order to clean them, no doubt became a tedious task in a short time. However, the technology did not exist to improve on this method. That is, not until the year of 1782, when the first washing machine was designed by a man named H. Sidgier from Great Britain. This machine consisted of a cage with wooden rods and a handle that was used for turning.…

Before the Industrial Revolution, most families made their clothes themselves. Clothes had a special meaning to these people as told in Passage 2, "part of this practice took on a religious significance and was conducted in sacred spaces. Fabric itself could be very meaningful." The fabric was difficult to make, and as a result, was very expensive. Since the fabric was expensive, most cultures had a robe that was common among people, since robes wasted less fabric. There was no such thing as a zipper or even a button, so clothes were harder to get on and keep on. Clothes were not replaceable, they got handed down to each person in a family and merely got mended, to help save the money they didn't have.…

Typically, a play about two elderly woman poisoning lonely males would never have entertained my short attention span, but "Arsenic and Old Lace" was able to grasp and maintain my interest. The cleverly complex plot (the two woman murderers have a mobster nephew) proved to be both suspenseful and engaging, encouraging audience members to examine and predict the next twist. Each scene builds the anticipation of the climactic resolution, never failing to loose the viewers' attention. Flawlessly constructed with straightforward language, the involved story was not difficult for even the simplest audience member to understand.…

The results from the experiment showed bacterial growth in all groups.(control, polyester, and cotton) Bacterial growth was most significant within the first 7 days, but eventually the growth seemed to slow. This slower paced growth could have been directly related to the consumption of the agar, food source, earlier in the experiment by the bacteria. Overall results showed that the polyester socks had more bacterial growth than the cotton socks. As referenced in the background information bacteria causes foot odor, and the fact that the polyester had more bacterial growth indicates that the polyester would smell worse.…

The textile industry was the very first industry to be advanced. Before the revolution, cloth was typically woven at home, which would take long hours a day to do. With the creation of these new inventions, cloth was made much faster which led to a boost in merchants' profits. Industrial Revolution Research explains the textile industry during the industrial revolution, “The demand for cloth continued to rise, so merchants had to be in competition with others for their supplies to make it. This caused a problem for the consumers because the products were now at a much higher cost. The best solution was to try to use machinery, which was cheaper to sell then products that were made by hand (because they took a long time to create), therefore…

The textile industry is an important aspect in the lives of many Australians, whether it involves wearing the textile products, using it or making them. Due to the importance of the textile industry, companies rely on the exploitation of outworkers, in order to make large profits from their products. Outworkers, are unfairly paid staff, with indecent working hours, usually based working at home (Fair Work Ombudsman, 2017) Furthermore, outworkers receive unfair wages and experience appaling working conditions, which is why Australian consumers should be willing to spend more time, effort and money to buy clothing that is ethically made. However, when buying products, social/cultural, economic and legal perspectives need to be considered, as…

As human beings, we are changing clothes so many times a day. Our daily schedule consists of taking a visit to the gym, grocery store, or even the shower every once and a while. Throughout these busy days, our clothes begin to get loose and smell and no one likes that. Yet, everyone hates to do laundry because it becomes such a hassle and gets in the way of our schedule. I can’t say I’m not one of those lazy humans because, frankly, I am exactly that. After a long day of school, continuing on to practice then having to drive home…I never found time to, so I convinced my mom to help me. She agreed until she realized she was the only one doing laundry, which wasn’t a good day considering she put me back on laundry duty. The sad part was I had completely forgotten how to. Or so my mom thought but that didn’t keep my mom from reinforcing the rule. She just simply retaught me how to do laundry the very precise way. My mother had a job of her own so I didn’t complain.…

Major changes came to the textile industry during the 20th century, with continuing technological innovations in machinery, synthetic fibre, logistics, and globalization of the business.
