THE 2012 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS
The party of the ‘Aam admi’ (Common man), Congress, fielded a Bengali Brahmin, Pranab Mukherjee, as President. The son of a freedom fighter against British colonialism has served the Congress for more than four decades in various ministerial positions. His opponent, P. A. Sangma, a Christian “tribal”2, hails from the state of Meghalaya. The former Labour Minister was supported by the Opposition National Democratic Alliance, and the ruling regional parties Biju Janata Dal from Orissa and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam from Tamil Nadu, on the grounds of being the leader of the Tribal Forum. 22nd July 2012 decided the faith of these two ex-Congressmen. Both through their grit and ambition charted out their lives outside the villages they were born in. Their political journey started in rural constituencies of their home states. Their meteoric rise thereafter inspires awe in many. Disillusionment rankled both politicians, thus leading them to exit the party that was instrumental in getting India its independence. It is here that the similarities between the two men end. The older, Pranab Mukherjee3, was brought back to the folds of his parent party by P.V.     Pranab Kumar Mukherjee; born 11 December 1935) is the 13th and current President of India. Mukherjee was born to a Bengali Kulin Brahmin family at Mirati in the Bengal province of British India now in West Bengal. His father was kamada kinkar Mukherjee and his mother was rajlakshmi Mukherjee. Mukherjee attended the Suri Vidyasagar College in Suri (Birbhum), and then affiliated with the University of Calcutta. His hobbies are reading, gardening and music. He is Master of Arts degree in Political Science and History, as well as a degree in law from the University of Calcutta.. Pranab Mukherjee married Suvra Mukherjee on 13 July 1957. The couple have two sons and a daughter. A son, Abhijit Mukherjee, is a Congress MLA from West Bengal as of July 2012 His daughter is a Kathak dancer.ukherjee has authored several books like Beyond Survival, Challenge before the Nation, etc. Mukherjee began his career as an upper-division clerk in the office of the Deputy Accountant-General (Post and Telegraph) in Calcutta. Mukherjee got involved in the politics of the Indian National Congress in 1969. Indira Gandhi made Mukherjee the Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Rajya Sabha in 1978. Mukherjee became Leader of the House in the Lok Sabha in 2004. Mukherjee's political skills and long experience in government have led him to heading a large number of committees of Ministers in the government. Mukherjee was chairman of the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata. He is also the former chairman and president of the Rabindra Bharati University and the Nikhil Bharat Banga Sahitya Sammelan, as well as a former trustee of the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad and the Bidhan Memorial Trust.
