NUS rolls out “grade-free” system for its freshmen
By Ong Hwee Hwee, The Straits Times, 23 January 2014

In this article, the author addresses the issue of having a grading system in the National University of Singapore (NUS) where alphabetical grades will not be given anymore; instead, the only “grades” given will be a distinction, pass, or fail. A similar approach has been taken by the Singapore University of Technology and Design, and in certain modules in Nanyang Technological University and the Singapore Management University. The author feels that the new grading system would be effective for the students to concentrate on learning and not on the final grade.
The main gist of the article is that when an education system forces its students to be graded, the students would focus more on getting good grades than actually learning, meaning that it is possible for students to study hard just for tests and exams, but forget what they had learnt after they graduate. Thus, by introducing a system where students are not pressurized to do well, the freshmen are able to be more adventurous in their freshman year as there is no fear of failing the module. It also serves as a period of time for them to adapt to university life which may be a big leap forward from their previous educational experiences.
In paragraphs 12 to 14, the author has also stated that the freshmen of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine have been under this plan since 2010, and that they have not been shown to disregard their studies just because it does not count toward their final grade. This supports the author’s point of view that the ‘grade-free’ system of NUS will not be detrimental to the importance that students currently put on their studies. In fact, the author even goes on to state that such a system would allow for more time for freshmen to pursue other areas of their interest, such as participating in co-curricular activities.
In my opinion, this is a step forward in improving

Cretikos et al. (2008) stated that nurses do believe that pulse oximetry is an adequate monitoring of ventilation. However, pulse oximetry measurement has not been demonstrated to be a specific indicator of serious illness, and it lacks specificity. This is clear evidence that nurses lack the required skills and knowledge to undertake a comprehensive respiratory assessment (Meredith and Massey 2010).…

In this journal article, the authors discuss the importance of treating people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder otherwise known as PTSD specifically in the Department of Defense. Of four different treatments that were recommended by the Joint Clinical Practice Guidelines for PTSD, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) treatment and its effectiveness are covered in this journal (Russell, 2007). EMDR treatment concentrates on the correlation between eye movement and certain visual triggers that result in reliving or remembering past memories that were especially shocking or stressful.…

Paul Goodman suggests that in order to counter the strict, lockstep tendencies of American educational institutions, that universities as well as secondary schools devise strategies to encourage greater flexibility, creativity and independence for the student, without which full, adult learning cannot take place. Specifically, Goodman proposes that prestigious liberal arts universities institute a new requirement: students shall engage in a “maturing” activity for two years before matriculating. Examples of “maturing” activities are “working for a living [...]; community service, [...], volunteer service in hospital or settlement house, domestic Peace Corps; the army” (Goodman). This proposal would push up the average age of the entering student and make him or her more ready for academic work, such as anthropology or the physical sciences, which are better understood with “experience and judgement” (Goodman).…

A Proposal to Abolish Grading is a piece by Paul Goodman who raises many important questions about the current educational system inducted by the majority of universities. In this essay I will be both analyzing and evaluating this piece and what it's purposes to the best of my ability. I think that the most important question or thesis of this piece is the question of would it be beneficial to eliminate the current process of grading at a few prestigious universities. Is this a logical I idea and how does he present it. How would this effect the level of competence on any subject a student is learning about? How would grad schools and employers know what a student has learned? Does grading hinder teaching in a way that creates a bad spirit? These are a few of many questions that arise with this proposal.…

As a result of grade inflation, some students face difficult time in college because they don’t have the necessary background to complete the course. According to Enrico Uva (2012) in his article “The Causes and Consequences of Grade Inflation”, one of the negative effects of grade inflation is that students who have mediocre or average ability in their course work end up placed in advanced classes, which leads to frustration in both students and teachers. Students can hardly keep up with the difficult tasks, and this can make them demotivated, lower their self-esteem, increase hatred towards the particular subject, and eventually will force them to drop the class or fail it. Moreover, Professor Alicia Shepard (2005) in her article “A’s for Everyone ” believes that students, who have earned undeserved A’s in secondary school, will be facing hard time when they enroll in college. In addition, grade inflation is not fair for students who work really hard and get B’s compared…

Her company who had hired the employee after the employee’s company had went out of business then that owner rehired the employee after his business became booming again then he went out of business which left that employee unemployed so the owner of the company was responsible for the unemployment claim. Since the owner’s account was put into deficit that threatened her unemployment insurance tax rate even though the employee had voluntarily left her company.…
