Arthurian Legends Merlin
In the Arthurian legends Merlin is a key figure who not only guides and mentors Arthur, but also serves as a seer and a prophet to Arthur and the kingdom. Merlin views on life and humanity change over his lifetime, and change throughout time because of the views and preferences of that era and the factors that stress the people of that generation of literature. In “Merlin the Mad” written by Norris Lacy in the 21st century and Vita Merlini written by Geoffrey of Monmouth in the 12th century, Merlin is portrayed with great difference due to the time period of Merlin’s life that the stories are written around and how different stressors affect him and his mental state.
In Vita Merlini Merlin is shown to be King of Briton rather than Arthur and

In this adaptation Merlin is shown to be a much more powerful and wise magician, having known that he would be trapped by Niviene and actually planning the entombment himself to help King Arthur and his rule over the kingdom. Merlin’s decision is for the greater good of the country and is made so that Arthur may fully develop as king and is able to make decisions on his own, rather than just relying on Merlin’s abilities. While Merlin is trapped, he questions who he is and how people view him “so who am I? Merlin the Prophet? Or Merlin the Magician? Or just Merlin the Madman? Or Merlin in love with what he could never hope to have? And does it really matter now?”(Lacy). This reflects on our society in how that people have a pressure to fit into boxes and not be able to express themselves. This societal pressure plays a major role in how Merlin’s character was developed. After the entombment Merlin is shown to descend into madness because of the darkness and absence of other living things “people think of darkness as the absence of light, but this is not an absence: it is a terrible presence, almost a heavy, glutinous substance: Darkness”(Lacy). The darkness that Merlin feels is an absence of interaction with the outside world making him go crazy. Merlin’s insanity relates to how our modern society has such a dependence on …show more content…
These stressors shape Merlin as a character and are what change him over the different time periods that he is written into. Merlin’s changes over time are due to a shifting viewpoint on how we perceive the environment and society around

In the infant stages of his acting career, Arthur is virgin. Optimistic and determined, citing the city as the feeling of freedom, he is everything of youth. But thirty years later Arthur is bitter, tired, and wary of the very same public eye that thrust him into fame. All that he loves (the stage, his three ex-wives, his son) he abandons. He is equal parts unreliable and insincere. Thus it seems fitting that in his final moments…

Additional proof of Arthur being an archetypal hero are the tests, allies and enemies he encountered within the story. He faced many tests on his journey but one stood out. This test was the one where Arthur was getting the hour hand from Mister Monday. To actually get to Mister Monday he had to first cross a web that would only be out for a few minutes then go through a pit of snakes that would spit poison and finally through a pit of “dark yellow mud that bubbled and popped like burning porridge”(311). This all lead up to Arthur getting the hour hand from Mr. Monday.…

The story of the greatest king of all time has been developed over centuries. The Arthurian legend has no known author’s that can claim the original Arthurian legend however it is stated that three authors helped shaped the Arthurian legend, such as Geoffrey of Monmouth, Chretien de Troyes and Sir Thomas Malory. These author’s work, specifically Sir Thomas Malory’s, have been the main sources for many authors that translate the legend from Middle English to modern English in the late nineteenth century and the twentieth century for modern readers to understand and enjoy the fantastic legend of King Arthur. However, Malory’s famous novel “Le Morte D’Arthur” did not seem appropriate for youngsters, because of its sexual details, betrayal, adultery,…

If Merlin told the people that Arthur, was the rightful king everyone would be happy and excited. So Merlin was telling Arthur to believe in himself and pull the sword out of the stone. None of the noblemen can pull the sword from the stone, but when Arthur tries, the author reveals, "Do you expect us to believe this scrawny boy succeeded where we all failed? With trembling hands, Arthur reaches for the sword. He easily pulls it from the stone. Arthur is the rightful king of this land, the one and only son of king Uther!" In other words, Arthur was the true king and everyone will be having no fights and everyone will be together. The quote develops Merlin's motivation by revealing he is very helpful when it comes to his friends being the…

As a young boy, Merlin lived with his mother in his grandfather's palace in Maridunum. Merlin's life in his grandfather's palace was harsh in such a way that he was not like the other young boys surrounding him. He was extremely intelligent and at the time, maybe too smart for his own good. However, his grandfather and other figures of authority in the palace would critique him because he was not a "normal" child. He was not the type to become a soldier to defend his…

One main difference between the movie “Excalibur” and “Merlin” is the way it was told to the viewers. In “Excalibur” the story of Arthur was played out scene by scene. The story wasn’t told by a single person, it was acted out with dialogue and in a chronological order. Comparing to the movie “Merlin” which on the other hand was told by a single person, that person being Merlin himself. The story was told the way Merlin remembered it, with his dialogue explaining what was happening throughout…

In some depictions of the British warrior, known as King Arthur, he was a brilliant military strategist. One piece of evidence that points to this is the Saxon invasion of Britain during the 5th to 6th century, as the British forces were led by an unnamed military mind (“King Arthur”). This evidence gives a historical invasion that led to one depiction of an Arthur. The next piece of evidence is that Britain prevailed in the Saxon invasion under the leadership of a warrior that excelled in military strategy. This is interesting information that can be perceived as one of Arthur’s first steps to saving Britain. The final example to note is that it is believed that Arthur’s affiliation is Roman (“King Arthur”). This information is exceptional because there might be religious reasons why Arthur is depicted as this great warrior. With that said, knowing Arthur’s possible affiliation allows a person to connect him with the military mind that led the British forces as that leader was affiliated with the Roman.…

The quest of the Sangreal in Le Morte D'Arthur depicts several of the characteristics of Medieval Romance. For instance, Sir Launcelot's struggle to find the grail and come to terms with his sins reflects the quality. Sir Launcelot's attempt at the grail begins on page 387, and the ensuing events show the knight as the tale's protagonist. Another key element of this literature was the notion of a quest and the physical and mental struggles involved in it. In portraying the fundamental characteristic of the quest, Malory writes of Sir Galahad and his pursuit of the Holy Grail. Sir Galahad's quest tested every facet of his character, but the spiritual rewards were received in the end. When Sir Galahad finally attained the Holy Grail he declared, "I thank you (Jesus) for giving me what I have desired; and now, if it please you, I pray, may I leave this world?" (430). Since his quest was over, his wish was granted, and angels lifted his soul to heaven.…

Merlin has no control over his power. Merlin only knows what his god wants him to know. Merlin can only see the big picture and not the small details. Merlin knows that the plan will be fulfilled, but he does not know “how” it will be. For example, he does not foresee killing King Gorlios. As much as Merlin is a prophet, he is still mortal. Merlin has faults like everybody else. Uther blames Merlin for how the plan happened, but Uther quickly forgets that Merlin never guaranteed anything. The problem is everyone expects more than Merlin can deliver. Nobody can deny that Merlin is a great prophet, but people get mad when Merlin cannot fulfill every whim. They do not understand that his power does not work on command. People expect more than what Merlin can…
