There we observed the change in the form of statues. Being able to see the statues and painting we’ve studied and saw in our textbook in real life amused me. Being able to go up to them and look at the details rather than staring at the photographs also made me more interested in the art itself. For this assignment I decided to compare “Seated Statue of Gudea” and “Statue of Eros Sleeping”. Fist, the “Seated statue of Gudea” is from 2150–2100 B.C. the Neo-Sumerian period. It is a 44cm tall Diorite statue. The description at the museum mentioned that this sculpture belongs to a series of diorite statues commissioned by Gudea, who was a Mesopotamian king. He rebuilt the great temples of Lagash and installed statue of himself in the temple. The posture of this statue is, an upright seated way on a throne like chair. It has its hands folded on its lap. It also is wearing a turban looking headwear with curls. It has a calm expression, large almond shaped eyes. It is wearing a draping robe. It has Sumerian inscription which lists the various temples that Gudea built or renovated in Lagash and names the statue itself, "Gudea, the man who built the temple; may his life be long."-Metropolitan Museum. It is 85.24 cm long bronze statue. This statue is of a mythological god, Eros. Eros is the Greek god of love and sexual desire. He was also worshiped as a fertility god. This statue depicts Eros as a baby. The figure is in an exhausted and relaxing, reclining poses. The figure has pudgy limbs and curly hair. Unlike the “Seated statue of Gudea”, it has naturalistic detail. Which makes it realistic, and humanized besides the fact of it having wings on its back. According to the descriptions at the Metropolitan Museum, this statue in the Roman period served a purposed of decoration in the villa gardens and fountains. Its function in the Hellenistic period isn’t clear but possibly have been used as dedications within a sanctuary of Aphrodite or possibly erected in a public park or private, even royal,

    The statue of Eros sleeping is one of the key attractions in the metropolitan museum collections for the lovers of ancient Greek history. Undoubtedly, the Bronze Statue of Eros Sleeping is noteworthy not only for physical aspects but also for its iconographic significance in art history, particularly in understanding Greek culture of which the statue was once a part of. The ability of the statue to last for so long shows its sculptors determination to make a lasting piece that he no doubt meant to preserve the cherished culture of the time.
