Art Institute of Chicago Museum Report When I first starting planning out the trip to down town to visit the museum I thought it would go actually the way I planned it. The plan was to wake up on Sunday make sure I wore enough layers of clothing because I am always cold; get on the train and go. Well it was a bit more complicated than that. I woke up later than I expected but still had fun waiting at the train station with my boyfriend. Also I did not wear proper shoes because when I started driving off it started raining, but my car is an endless closet so I found some shoes that were not going to soak through when I hit the first big puddle in Chicago. On the train ride I started calculating what I wanted to see and in what order, but I did not consider that my boyfriend would want to see something else and that we have different taste. This of course was a problem when we got there. So when we started walking down the couple of blocks that would get us to the museum from Union Station, I knew there would be bums, but they decided that Sunday was the best day to come out. On the way there we got asked by more than five bums if we could make a donation so that they can help the homeless shelters to support them. They especially liked the area right in front of the museum so it was hard not to make contact with them. However once inside I did not expect the museum to be so large because on the outside it honestly looked smaller. The lady at the front desk was nice enough to give us student discounts even though neither of us had our student IDs, and my boyfriend was finally happy that he can dry off his feet, unlike me he did not think about carrying around boots with him. After I grabbed a map and started naming off things that I wanted to see, my boyfriend stated he is a more modern type of guy. This statement completely threw me off of the path that I wanted to take, and I questioned him if he knows what modern art is, because I honestly do

    As I arrived at the Newark Museum of Art, I noticed that the outside of the Museum looked like a house, which gave me the feeling of it being a very welcoming place. It really was, especially the touring guide, who was very nice to our group , and who really seemed very passionate about Art. At first, the inside of the museum looked very small, and that was because the waiting room at the beginning was not as big as I thought it would be, and there was not really much to look at around that area. Shortly after, we started our tour up some stairs, and through the halls, and I noticed some construction going on around the beginning of the tour. Even though it was a little distracting because of the noise, the information that the tour guide was narrating was far more interesting, especially the way she was narrating it, with such excitement and passion in her words. The colorful painting all over the halls, and up and down the stairs really made my imagination, and art critique expand for that hour and half tour.…

    The second-largest art museum in the country, the Art Institute houses treasures and masterpieces from around the globe, including a fabulous selection of both impressionist and post-impressionist paintings. The theme I decided to pick was called the Holiday Thorne room. The Holiday Thorne room has the most magnificent displays including descriptions of holiday objects that were labeled as historic from previous ownerships. Some artifacts took us all the way back to Germany and China which sparked the room for the holiday spirit. The 68 dollhouse-like rooms, built on a scale of one inch to one foot, display what rooms around the world looked like in different historical eras. The curator name was Lindsay Morgan, and said adding the Christmas decorations was a lot of work. Morgan says she spends months researching the holiday traditions for each room. Last year on NBC’s Today show, they had labeled the Art Institute’s most popular attractions. As I was absorbing the room’s beauty, I took note on how the rooms were specially made for holiday fineries that showcases historical traditions. Also they had offers on the window into seasonal festivities. New to the decorating tradition this year is the Pennsylvania Dutch (German) room.     1. formal and iconographic characteristics are seen in high renaissanace, venetian and mannerist paintings. to begin with, in high renaissance michaelangelos Moses is shown holding the 10 commandments. You can clearly see the anger that is dipicted through the facial expression on moses. Michaelangelo wonderfully portrays the psychological states in moses, through the iconographic characteristics of his puffed lower lip, arched toes and the bulging of his veins. the formal characteristics are seen through michealangeols mastery of lines, which help create the anger that is being felt by moses. The formal characteristic of the lining of his beard and clothing show his inner turmoil. In the venetian painting of the virgin of the rocks by Leonardo Da Vinci, the artist magnificantly uses the chiaroscuro method of light and dark to model the expression and emotional states of the figures being portrayed. The lines, soft and subtle give the painting a more intimate feeling. The figures are all shown interacting with one another, praying, pointing, and blessing. He also presents the figures in a pyramidal group and sharing the same environment. The figures emerge through the use of light and shading from the half-light of the cavernous visionary landscape. For mannerism, formal characteristics are clearly seen in Parmigianino's Madonna with the long neck. Although nothing is shown in proportion the painting still apears soft and smooth, through the lines and colors used. The madonnas long neck, the delicacy of her hands and swaying elongation of her frames are all signs of mannerism. On the left stands the angelic creatures melting with emotions as soft and smooth as their limbs. on the right the artist includes a line of columns without capitals and an enigmatic figure with a scroll whose distance from the foreground is immeasureable and imbiguous.…

    Travelers among Mountains and Streams is comprised of several design elements. Form, leading lines, and shape. These design elements move the eye throughout the painting in a continuous interaction between the elements. Each section is well balanced and rich in content. The large mountain in the foreground sets the foundation for the painting by serving as a barrier, keeping the viewers eyes from leaving the page. The area showing the travelers moving in the stream sets a sense of motion, engaging the eye to travel through the painting. The grand scale of all the elements inspire the viewer to be transported into the realm of fantasy promoted by Northern Song painters. The painting takes on a naturalistic feel that is derived from the combination of paint, ink, and silk. The people and mules moving through the stream bring a sense of scale to the painting. They are an important element in that they are in direct comparison to the large Mountain. The helps promote the idea that there is something bigger than all of of us and that humans are somehow spiritually connected to the earth. An important idea that Northern Song Artist aspired to communicate through ere work. The painting is done in a realistic approach yet is not set in a specific place further enhancing the dream like quality meant to promote spiritual communication and enlightenment. This interpretation is about the balance between the countryside and mans attempt to conquer it brought to life in the form of a painting by Fan Kuan.
