    The first one I’m going to be talking about is called “Statue of Venus (the Mazarin Venus),” the artist is unknown; it’s located in Rome, Italy and dated on A.D. 100-200. Its size is human size approximation 6’ 3” high. The texture looked smooth, but with some toughness, its color to me looked beige, the shape is of a woman holding a blanket or towel to cover herself by her side she has a dolphin and the medium is made of marble. Some information I found of this statue is that her name is “Aphrodite” (Venus), the daughter of Zeus and Dione. “She is the goddess of love and beauty. In one version of her myth, she was born from the foam (aphros in Greek) of the sea” (107). “Venus, the goddess of love, stands nude, grasping a piece of cloth around her hips. The dolphin at her feet supports the figure and alludes to the goddess’s birth from the sea” (Getty Museum). The period of the statue is a Roman. “It was discovered in Rome, where it contributed to the Renaissance revival of the Classical tradition” (Getty Museum).     1. formal and iconographic characteristics are seen in high renaissanace, venetian and mannerist paintings. to begin with, in high renaissance michaelangelos Moses is shown holding the 10 commandments. You can clearly see the anger that is dipicted through the facial expression on moses. Michaelangelo wonderfully portrays the psychological states in moses, through the iconographic characteristics of his puffed lower lip, arched toes and the bulging of his veins. the formal characteristics are seen through michealangeols mastery of lines, which help create the anger that is being felt by moses. The formal characteristic of the lining of his beard and clothing show his inner turmoil. In the venetian painting of the virgin of the rocks by Leonardo Da Vinci, the artist magnificantly uses the chiaroscuro method of light and dark to model the expression and emotional states of the figures being portrayed. The lines, soft and subtle give the painting a more intimate feeling. The figures are all shown interacting with one another, praying, pointing, and blessing. He also presents the figures in a pyramidal group and sharing the same environment. The figures emerge through the use of light and shading from the half-light of the cavernous visionary landscape. For mannerism, formal characteristics are clearly seen in Parmigianino's Madonna with the long neck. Although nothing is shown in proportion the painting still apears soft and smooth, through the lines and colors used. The madonnas long neck, the delicacy of her hands and swaying elongation of her frames are all signs of mannerism. On the left stands the angelic creatures melting with emotions as soft and smooth as their limbs. on the right the artist includes a line of columns without capitals and an enigmatic figure with a scroll whose distance from the foreground is immeasureable and imbiguous.…

    This paper is a formal analysis of the Marble grave stele with a family group relief sculpture. It is a pentelic marble style relief standing at 171.1cm tall carved by a master. It is from the Late Classical period of Greek, Attic which was completed around ca.360 B.C. . I chose to analyze this piece as apposed to the others because I’m mainly attracted to art and sculptures from the Greek era. The overall color used in this relief is ivory with a few cracks and pieces broken off. There is some discoloration which causes the color to come off as slightly light brown for most of the relief. The sculpture appears larger compared to the other sculptures in the art room. It represents a family which includes a man, his wife, and their child united on one high relief. There is a fourth character that is a part of the relief but she appears to be incomplete. The high relief contributes to the overall size of this sculpture by expanding the shape and proportions of all the characters. The right side is compact consisting of three of the four characters while the left is loose with just a head present.…

    The reaction of the public was that of not understanding what the artists were trying to convey. They did not understand that Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase, was based on the concept of motion. In Michelangelo’s David he was making a political statement. In both works of art, part of what viewers found objectionable about them was that they (the public) did not understand what the works represented. In Michelangelo’s David, the public saw nudity. Other people saw politics and religion were being attacked. In Duchamps painting, the public I think, partially responded to the paintings name, and they did not understand that the painting was not actually of a nude person but was a “series of photographs by Etienne-Jules Marey, representing motion. The objects in the photographs were fully clothed. Etienne-Jules Marey’s photographs that went on to bring about the invention of the motion picture” (Sayre, p. 45, 2010). When I first looked at the painting of Nude Descending a Staircase, I did not see anything in it that gave me any idea of what the picture was about. On looking closer and reading the information about it, my opinion changed. I learned that his painting did have meaning, and that it had nothing to do with nude people. The motion pictures came from the work of Etienne-Jules Marey, and Duchamp saw the meaning and importance of his work.…

    Travelers among Mountains and Streams is comprised of several design elements. Form, leading lines, and shape. These design elements move the eye throughout the painting in a continuous interaction between the elements. Each section is well balanced and rich in content. The large mountain in the foreground sets the foundation for the painting by serving as a barrier, keeping the viewers eyes from leaving the page. The area showing the travelers moving in the stream sets a sense of motion, engaging the eye to travel through the painting. The grand scale of all the elements inspire the viewer to be transported into the realm of fantasy promoted by Northern Song painters. The painting takes on a naturalistic feel that is derived from the combination of paint, ink, and silk. The people and mules moving through the stream bring a sense of scale to the painting. They are an important element in that they are in direct comparison to the large Mountain. The helps promote the idea that there is something bigger than all of of us and that humans are somehow spiritually connected to the earth. An important idea that Northern Song Artist aspired to communicate through ere work. The painting is done in a realistic approach yet is not set in a specific place further enhancing the dream like quality meant to promote spiritual communication and enlightenment. This interpretation is about the balance between the countryside and mans attempt to conquer it brought to life in the form of a painting by Fan Kuan. In the painting the small humans are engulfed by the enormous mountains giving the effect of unattainability, yet the human spirit to conquering the elements arises out of the need explore.
