Art, Artist, and Beauty Art can be expressed through anything. In the novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind, Jean-Batiste Grenouille has a special ability nobody can compare to. He has a sense of smell that he uses to create art, though making perfumes. Making art can be an evil thing. Key events throughout the novel show how Grenouille uses evil to create his perfume. One of Grenouille's teachers, Baldini, teaches him that it is okay to steal other people's work and to kill people to make perfumes.When Grenouille smells something he is able to take that scent and can make it into a perfume. "As you know, I take my inspiration from no one. As you know, I create my own perfumes"(Suskind 49). Using the special gift he is given, Grenouille smelt something he had never smelt before and needed to find out what it was. "He was just about to leave this dreary exhibition… but for his heart to be at peace…"(38). When Grenouille found the smell, he had to have it. " Contained within it was the magic formula for everything that could make a scent… the greatest perfumer of all time"(44). Grenouille uses evil by killing the red headed girl, to be able to have the scent the girl gave off. Artist is a creative person that creates art because they feel they need to express their ideas. Smelling different scents on a daily, Grenouille came to be obsessed with girls' body odor. "Indeed, human odor was no importance to him whatever. He could… These were his victims"(188). While he is closer to his goal, to finish his perfume, Grenouille starts to panic about the fact that, after he has killed these girls and collected their smells, the essence of their smell will eventually run out and can never be replaced. He becomes suicidal, but then a thought occurrs to him. "He had decided to possess the scent of the girl behind the wall"(192). Grenouille uses evil to kill these girls for him to make his perfume. "The naked body of a fifteen-year-old girl was
