ART 100 ART APPRECIATION
Instructor: Wonjung Judy Jung nrjungw@nr.edu 540­951­1854 ( Please, no phone calls after 10:00pm.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION The purpose of this course is to expand the students’ awareness and understanding of visual art in both historical and practical terms. Through historical reference and hand on exercises, students will become familiar with artistic motivation and visual expression. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Students are expected to complete assignment by the assigned dates. 2. Students should be prepared for in­class assignments, both written and visual. 3. Any other materials needed for particular assignment will be announced in a class prior to the day is need.( check the semester calendar ) 4. All in­class visual and writing assignments will be collected that day and will not be able to make up. The instructor will keep them until the end of the term in individual file folders that will serve as the students’ “portfolio”. * Tests cannot be made up! TEXT ART FORMS: Duane Preble, Preble and Frank ASSIGNMENTS 1. Research paper or presentation (50 points)­ In this paper, I would like you to answer the question: “ If I were an artist, which artist from the history of art would I be like? Choose an artist you admire. Research his/her life and work and find out as much as you can about this artist. In your paper, briefly explain who this artist is and compare this artist’s life with your own life. ­Have you have any similar life experiences? ­What life experiences have you had that would influence the art you would create in the same way this artist was or is influenced? Explain why you are drawn to this artist. ­What do you admire about him/her? Describe in detail the work you would create if you were like this artist. ­ How would your work be similar? ­ How would it be different? ­ How would the work you would do relate to your own life experience? Your paper should include a very detailed description of at least one “master piece” you
