For instance, the Mountain Path at Utsu takes on a less realistic depiction of objects on the screen. Instead, all of the forms displaying nature are softened and rounded with no clear outline in a more decorative manner. Color takes the precedence in this screen over contour lines. Roshu ultilized a technique called tarashikomi, which ink is applied to an already wet surface. One can see this applied with the two-toned pink flowers on the mountains, and along the hilly mountains, as paint seems to drip down. This technique creates a smudge-like area on the screen, which is similar to using ink washes to tone down an area in a painting. Tiaga, however, follows the literati tradition, which focuses on brush strokes. For instance, Tiaga is often described as emphasizing " brush-dotted textures, and a rolling, rollicking rhythm runs through nearly all of his pictures, implying an extroverted good humor." One can see these dotted textures in the foliage along the mountains and the leaves in the trees. Unlike more traditional literati painting that would have been in monochrome, Tiaga introduces "occasional dots of darker and wetter ink, and small areas touched with ruby red and emerald green colors, enliven this otherwise dry, airy landscape." These harsh lines demonstrate the autumn season to serve a decorative…

Christina’s World is a painting set in 1948 by American painter Andrew Wyeth, and one of the best known paintings from the late 20th century. It illustrates a woman lying on the ground in a treeless, mostly orangey field, looking up at a gray house on the horizon with barns and small sheds across from the house. The young woman in the painting is Anna Christina Olson. It is said she suffered from polio (a muscular deterioration) that paralyzed her from the waist down. Wyeth had a summer home close to Christina’s and was inspired to draw the painting after he saw her crawling through the field of her home. The painting’s wasted limbs and pink dress belong to Christina Olson. The youthful head and torso belong to Betsy Wyeth (Andrew Wyeth’s wife) who was then in her mid-20s. Although Olson was the inspiration and subject of the painting, she was not the primary ideal.…

But on the trees to the side and the bucks down in the field are somewhat detailed and they are not just a stroke of a brush. He tried to make sure that you were able to tell what it was that you were looking at. This piece of art is very interesting to look at because you have to look close to see what all is happening in this painting.…

Upon closer inspection, the texture of the brushstrokes can be described as grainy and the lines dividing objects are not as crisp. The painting is fairly large. Being six feet tall, the figures in the foreground are not life-size but are still around four feet tall. The size of the painting could affect how the viewer sees the wide boulevard as it appears as though the viewer is standing in the street among…

Gim Hwangi was influenced by constructionism and geometric abstraction and soon became one of twentieth century Korea’s influential painters. In his pieces, he typically adopted the date of a work’s creation as its title -- 5-IV-71. His paintings illustrate the paradox that the modern artist faces while finding a distinctive, personal style. This image is considered both Buddhist or Taoist. The two circular radiating patterns incorporate both native and naturalized elements from diverse Korean and Chinese traditions.…

Travelers among Mountains and Streams is comprised of several design elements. Form, leading lines, and shape. These design elements move the eye throughout the painting in a continuous interaction between the elements. Each section is well balanced and rich in content. The large mountain in the foreground sets the foundation for the painting by serving as a barrier, keeping the viewers eyes from leaving the page. The area showing the travelers moving in the stream sets a sense of motion, engaging the eye to travel through the painting. The grand scale of all the elements inspire the viewer to be transported into the realm of fantasy promoted by Northern Song painters. The painting takes on a naturalistic feel that is derived from the combination of paint, ink, and silk. The people and mules moving through the stream bring a sense of scale to the painting. They are an important element in that they are in direct comparison to the large Mountain. The helps promote the idea that there is something bigger than all of of us and that humans are somehow spiritually connected to the earth. An important idea that Northern Song Artist aspired to communicate through ere work. The painting is done in a realistic approach yet is not set in a specific place further enhancing the dream like quality meant to promote spiritual communication and enlightenment. This interpretation is about the balance between the countryside and mans attempt to conquer it brought to life in the form of a painting by Fan Kuan. The outdoor mural on the east facing side of the WMCAT building is a breathtaking mosaic called The Metaphorest Project, created by Tracy VanDuinen. This larger than life size vista was an Artprize entry in 2011, and took 2nd place in the competition. This set the standard for not only large-scale public art within Grand Rapids MI, but also the most exhilarating. The scene is an impressive mixture of 2-D and 3-D design, the foreground being mostly of relief sculpture and multi-media mosaic; the background painted. Shen Zhou's Poet on a Mountaintop differs from that of Yin Hong's, Hundreds of Birds Admire the Peacocks in many ways. Shen Zhou's painting is very simple with very little detail. His painting is predominantly of the landscape with a person located on the top of the mountain. This is contrast to Yin Hong's painting where there are no people in the whole painting. Yin Hong's painting is also very detailed with many birds and trees, which is a characteristic of Chinese court paintings. On the contrary, Shen Zhou also only uses one color in his painting. It appears he uses grays, but this is created from washes, meaning watered down black in spread across the painting to make it appear as if it were a gray. This color difference is arguably the major visual variation between Shen Zhou's and Yin Hong's paintings. Another visual…
