Myers et al., (2005) studied individuals in India living in arranged marriages and found no differences in marital satisfaction in comparison to individuals in non-arranged marriages in the US. This is also supported by Gupta and Singh (1982) who studied 100 degree-educated couples living in India, 50 of who had chosen their partners and 50 of who had their marriages arranged for them. The couples were asked to indicate how much they liked/loved their partners and it was found that love and liking was high in love marriages but decreased whereas love increased in arranged marriages and after 10 years exceeded love marriages. However, this study is difficult to generalise as it studies only a small sample and so cannot be generalised to the wider population. It therefore lacks validity.…

I disagree; I believe that families should not have the right to set up their children with who they think best suits their child. I personally would not prefer my parents to set me up with someone who they think is a great person, because I have different standards then they do. If parents were to choose who they want their child to marry then they will be involved in the couple’s lives, therefore if the relationship is not working out the couple would be too scared to get a divorce because of what their family might do.…

First reason I think in the same way as view 2 about arranged marriages and love marriages because I feel people should trust in themselves more than parents or a matchmaker. Based on a love marriage which mean two people trust in themselves more than someone else advice to them or decide for them of they have to do, and about choose someone to be a marriage partner for them. Just like in the Catalyst 2 book on page 93, chapter 4, reading 2, view 2, and paragraph 6 mean that they can understand their own feeling, their own decision and their mind better than just listen from someone telling them about their own future was like. Instead of let their family get involve in future partner; they can learn and…

However, it is connected to my sister's life because her marriage was fixed as arranged marriage. Even though it was arranged my parents give her one whole year to think about it and talk to the guy and get to know him and then make the decision. Now she is jubilant about the decision my parents made for her by choosing the guy and letting her know about him before marriage. The primary focus of this paper is to explain different concepts of forced and arranged marriage. Most of the people assume forced and arranged marriage is the same thing. However, in reality, forced marriage is a nightmare for a girl even how hard they try to get out of it is impossible to escape from it. In an arranged marriage, at least, the girl or boy gets the choice to speak out. Arranged marriages are marriages that are arranged by families, specifically parents or other elder members of the family; it is a cultural and traditional norm. Many people assume arranged marriages and forced marriages are similar in fact they are not. It is imperative to clear that forced marriage and arranged marriage are completely two different practices. In South Asia, forced marriages are…

Many parents want the best for their child, but choosing the one their child should marry is not the answer. After reading the article Arranging a Marriage in India my first thoughts were why would any man or woman want to marry someone they are unfamiliar with, no nothing about them. I had the same mind as Serena Nanda who is the woman who got to experience it all while her trip to India. Of course my opinions had changed after reading the article, although I never had a problem with arranged marriages because I had been aware that some cultures do that as a lifestyle, but the idea of it kind of sounding like the parents are selling the daughter. As Serena mentions that how in the U.S we find the one we love and then marry after a few years of dating if it’s the right one of course, but now divorce rate is very high and it’s usually because it’s cheating or you just get tired of being with the same person. But how a women in India see it, they marry the guy that the parents have arranged them with and they seem to have a very flow and happy marriage, but how can that be? Is what I ask myself? They are people who have never talked or seen before yet they enjoy each other, although I like the idea on how when they marry they get to know each other and they aren’t tired of each other because it’s just the beginning of their marriage, it’s kind of like dating in U.S only they’re married. They interview with Sita, Sita mentions on how her parents have experience and they know what’s best for her when picking the right guy for her to get married with. While they are picking boys for her Sita doesn’t experience dating her parents do all the work for and all she does is goes to school and enjoys her youth she has more time to spend on her life instead of worrying about the man she might marry or boys. Sita’s reasoning was very understandable and I feel like I connect to that idea and that maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have an arranged marriage, but I know that it really isn’t for me. Education in man is very important when the parents of a soon to be bride is looking…

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I disagree with arranged marriage; I believe that families should not have the right to set up their children with who they think best suits their child. I personally would not prefer my parents to set me up with someone who they think is a good match for me, because I have different standards then they do and I have a different idea of who the type of person I would like to spend my time with. Parents want to see their children with successful spouses and who they think are a good person. Arranged marriages are done in around 60% of the world because the system works. In Asia, mainly India and China, arranged marriages are the main form of marriage though this has decreased as science the 18th century. To the parents, choosing their child’s spouse is much more beneficial for the family than the child picking someone that might not be the best fit for the family. Because the parents get to pick, they can chaise someone who is close to the families’ roots, someone who shares the same values of the parents, and someone who will preserve their families culture in future generations. The benefits also work as a union of families, economically and socially as the two families will become more powerful united with each other. The article, Arranged Marriages, by Jefferson M. They are better described as well aged traditions, rather than antiquated. Regardless of these erroneous beliefs, arranged marriages are changing to better suit the current time period. These changes involve adding prohibitions, on things like dowries, and minimizing the importance of caste (Marriage). Some might argue that arranged marriages leave people closed minded and, regardless of the benefits, belittle the children involved. Contrary to this belief, most children approve of their parents choosing their spouses, because they believe that their parents are more knowledgeable and truly do know what is best for them (Traditional Arranged Marriages). Since the children understand and believe this fact, they are able to work with their parents in the process and their feelings and emotions are taken into consideration. If anything, the children are maturing and being propelled into adulthood because of the arranged marriage…

While to many people raised in the west, this might sound odd. It is important to remember that in Indian society an arranged marriage is seen as an act of love. Since marriage is one of the most important decisions a person will ever make and because divorce is not accepted among most Indians, it is imperative that the marriage choice is carefully thought out and planned. How can a young person make such an important decision on his/her own? Instead, the family (usually the parents) look for certain traits in a marriage partner. Some desirable traits looked for in both male and female are: matching levels of education, matching cultures, close parental cities, matching religions, and matching vegetarians/non-vegetarians just to name a few.…

Although the modern social norms of western cultures expect marriage to be based on love and a strong bond between two people, this is not the basis for marriage in all cultures or societies. Although the greater parts of arranged marriages aren’t intended to be forced, the couples are given the chance to oppose their chosen partners if they don’t feel that the marriage would be a success. In other cases, the couples have no choice; it’s a sign of disrespect to refuse.…
