The Importance of the Role of the Human Resources Sergeant

The professional Soldier is an expert in their field; they need to feel as if the Army is a calling, not a job. The professional Soldier needs to have a moral and ethical character and have the trust and respect at all levels. The professional develops early in their career by following and learning from exemplary role models. These role models help develop self-identity, character, and expertise in their subordinates.
The attributes of a professional Soldier are: skill, trust, leadership, character, and duty. These attributes develop within the Soldier over time and by the Army, the profession. The key attributes of the profession are: expertise, trust, development, values, and service. These go hand in hand with one another.

FM 1-0 (2014) states, “HR support uses a competency-based and performance-oriented strategy guided by HR enduring principles that assure a higher quality, more diverse and ready Total Army enabled by effective HR systems and agile policies.” These professionals use six principles to guide them: integration, anticipation, responsiveness, synchronization, timeliness, and accuracy. Integration builds efficiency by streamlining the way work is accomplished. Anticipation comes from experience, knowledge, and education resulting in a Soldier being able to anticipate what might come next and being prepared for the event or outcome. Responsiveness is the next step. They know what is coming and plan the proper response. Synchronization, timeliness, and accuracy are all closely related. Making sure all the elements needed come together, while ensuring the higher levels have access to the accurate information with enough time to
