army brat narrative
Army Brat Travelling has always been a passion of mine. Being an army brat, I find seeing new places, meeting new people and getting to know their different “traditions”, exceptionally inspiring. But having to stay and live at the places I thought I was visiting was a difficult task for me. I love meeting new people and I enjoy having friends from all over but going to different schools every other year was a harder task. I have moved to quite a few places like Georgia, Hawaii, Fayettville NC, and so on. These were just the most memorable places. Being born here in Morehead City, I had a much different life than when I had to live on base. Well, living on base can be nice, sometimes, but it’s really crowded because the houses are connected usually. So when I came home to where I was born, here, it was nice to have our own space.
Schooling is also easier on base due to the grading rubric. To get an 80 meant you got a B and to get a 90 meant you got an A. The work wasn’t as complicated and actually we were a little behind the schools off base. I was going to Morehead Primary and in about 3rd grade was when I moved to Hawaii. We were already starting cursive when I left and when I got to Solomon Elementary in Hawaii it took months before we got to cursive and I was relearning stuff I already knew. Still that gave me and advantage and I got better grades. I left Hawaii and moved back halfway through fourth grade and that’s when I started having troubles because Morehead City Elementary, or Camp Glenn, was way ahead of me. I had D’s pretty much that whole year. My mom never got told I was having troubles so it really never got fixed in time.
Leaving my friends every time I moved was the most difficult task ever. When I left in third grade I had a great friend. She was my best buddy ever you could say. I lost all contact with her when I moved back in 6th grade from Fayetteville because at that point we started going to different schools. Only because I lived in

The reality for many child soldiers is that even after their time in the military ends, there are lasting affects that continue even after their time participating in the war is over. These former child soldiers may face psychological issues, ranging from depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as many other mental health issues. They may also suffer with social issues. They may not be accepted back into their families or communities, as they may be branded as a traitor, dangerous, or untrustworthy. In the case of former female child soldiers, they may be branded as impure. This lack of integration may lead to isolation, which poses other negative consequences related to substance abuse or conflict within future relationships. Simply because the former child soldier is removed from the warfront doesn’t mean that the war isn’t over for these former child soldiers.…

I’m three miles in on a four-mile morning training run along the sandy Southern Californian coastline. I can’t breathe, and all I see is the ground an inch in front of my face. My Drill Sergeant’s booming voice jolts me back into my senses. I push myself up as I spit out the mouthful of wet sand between my teeth, and immediately my legs begin propelling me forward. My running buddy, De Guzman, already got 10 or so seconds on me so I lean forward, wipe my face, and keep advancing. For another what feels like an eternity, I feel my arms and legs robotically pumping. My heart is racing, my entire body is shaking, my eyes begin to slowly shut, and then I see it: Lieutenant Colonel McMahon standing by the Academy gates, announcing everyone’s times.…

However, my family moved to Tucson, AZ and that is when I went to school for the first time. The transition from being home schooled to a place where I did not know anyone was never racking. I was not around people I knew . Now living in a different state, my mother and grandmother found relief from being able to send us to a better school. While my mom worked at a hospital, my grandmother was our caretaker. My grandmother relied on my aunt whom also lived in the area to drive us to school every morning and pick us up. But occasionally that would be an issue, because my aunt had a job, went to college and had her own children to take care of. One year later, my grandmother became sick and we moved back to Philadelphia because there were better…

The memory of my first big move is still fresh in my mind. I remember rushing to school, excited to tell my friends the news: I was moving from New Jersey to Phoenix, Arizona! After I brought my friends up to date, I proudly displayed my new disposable camera. Together we took many pictures, some of them meaningful and some comical. There were pictures of myself smiling and giggling with my friends and some of my teacher’s feet. As the moving date was slowly approaching, I began to feel resentment. I started hating the idea of moving to a new unknown place where I would have no friends. As it turned out, making new friends was not as hard as I thought because I was younger and I chose my friends superficially. However, I did have to learn to adapt to a new school and curriculum. I was not…

Military children are made to be resilient. First what is resilience? It is an individual person’s ability to recover from a lot of stress or to adjust to permanent life changes quickly and adaptively (Dictionary.com, 2012). Many would say that the military life is not for children. That could be farther from the truth. I believe that the military is the best opportunity for a child to become more resilient in life. Developing the skills of resilience for coping with a move, saying goodbye to friends and having a parent serve in a time of war becomes easier with time. These skills are best developed with a strong and loving support system at home. These skills will also help them grow into the next generation of leaders (Shackelford, C., n.d.). A military child has to opportunity to travel the world. To explore countries that any other child or even an adult would love to visit. As a veteran, military spouse and mother, I am privileged to allow our daughter to experience the wonders of the military. I know of many families who would not change their current life for another.…
