May 2007 to April 2009 Update Over the past two years, AFC has faced more intense competition, particularly from aquaculturists in Chile. In addition, Chilean output has increased the supply of salmon and the Canadian dollar has strengthened in relation to the U.S. dollar. As a result, AFC has been unable to meet its budgeted revenue targets. Stocks of unsold harvestable fish have increased, as well as the corresponding cost of maintaining the fish, and the company barely made a profit in fiscal 2009. In January 2009, AFC lost one of its largest retail customers, S&F Seafood, to a new salmon aquaculture firm, Nu-Farm Inc. This new competitor uses a sophisticated, computerized system for supply chain and product distribution functions. The system allows Nu-Farm to establish web links with customers, such as S&F Seafood, and to manage orders and deliveries directly for each of the customer’s retail outlets. This has eliminated the need for customers to make separate arrangements to receive and warehouse fresh fish, and to ultimately distribute the fish to their retail locations. In February 2009, 2,000 kilograms of fish from Site 4 were rejected by three important customers, two of which are located in the United States. An internal investigation revealed that two employees at Site 4 had neglected to follow established procedures and failed to reject some fish that did not meet quality standards and were not certified by the staff veterinarian. In April 2009, employees neglected to secure some of the net-pens at Site 3. During a storm, more than 300,000 kilograms of young fish escaped from these net-pens and most were subsequently lost to predators. Although the company’s property and liability insurance covers criminal theft of fish, it does not cover the loss of fish from disease, parasites, escape, or predators. In addition, there is no liability coverage with…

Secondly, I calculate the Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) which will be used as discount rate while calculating NPV. Then, I decide which rapid prototyping system company should invest as well as I compare the each expansion projects’ IRR with WACC to decide which projects should be invested and which should not. After deciding projects which should be accepted, I draw Investment Opportunity Schedule (IOS) and Marginal Cost of Capital (MCC) graphs to decide where the company should finance accepted projects.…

Bergen, the president and CFO privately hold Kendle, a Contract Research Organisation which was incorporated in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1981. The Company provides integrated clinical research and drug developmental services on a contract basis to the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries. The Company's services comprise Phase II, III and IV of clinical trials. The CRO industry is a full service industry which provides integrated product development services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. CROs thus derive most of their revenue from the R&D spending of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies which is growing at a rate of 10% a year. These services are provided in accordance with government regulations. In 1995, worldwide spending on R&D by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies was estimated at $35 billion, of which $22 billion was spent on drug development activities and $4.6 billion was outsourced to CROs. CRO’s strive to boost revenues through faster drug development while also dealing with cost control pressures. The CRO industry is highly fragmented, with several CROs ranging from small, limited-service providers to full-service corporations. The number of new smaller entrants is increasing, however to develop capabilities of a full service CRO, significant cost and experience are necessary in order to: develop expertise in the various therapeutic areas, to develop the ability to manage complex clinical trials, to prepare regulatory submissions and also for developing integrated clinical data management capabilities. These factors have led to an increased rate of industry consolidation. Key Success Factors in the CRO Industry: Therapeutic expertise, broad range of service offering across multiple phases, Integrated Clinical Data Management (for efficiency in collection, editing, analysing date from thousands…

IntroductionEnager Industries Ltd (Enager) was a relatively young company whom manufactured and produced products/services within three divisions- Consumer Products, Industrial Products and Professional Services. Consumer Products, the oldest among the three divisions in Enager, designed, manufactured and marketed a line of houseware items. Industrial Products built one -of -a- kind machine tools to customer specifications. Professional Services, the newest among the three, provided several kinds of engineering services and this division had grown rapidly because of its capability to perform "environmental impact" studies. Each division was treated as an essentially independent company but all new project proposals requiring investment in excess of $1,500,000 had to be reviewed by the Chief Financial Officer, Henry Hubbard.…

The exchange offer represented a plan to gradually decrease the total dividend payout from Avon. With PERCS in place, only up to 18 million PERCS holders would continue to receive a dividend of $2 per year. The remaining common shareholders would receive dividends of not more than $1.50 a share per year unless the PERCS were redeemed. Hence, Avon would be able to decrease its dividend payout per common shareholder by at least 50 cents a share for the next 3 years.…

“If I were to price this crankshaft any lower than $225,” said Mike Brunner, manager of ABC Company’s Machining division, “I’d be countermanding my order of last month for our sales staff to stop shaving their bids and to bid full cost plus quotations. I’ve been trying for weeks to improve the quality of our business, and if I turn around now and accept this job at $195 or $200 or something less than $225, I’ll be tearing down this program I’ve been working so hard to build up. The division can’t very well show a profit by putting in bids which don’t even cover a fair share of overhead costs, let alone give us a profit.”…

    Duncan Industries

Duncan Industries has kept to a fast growth track with its signature product, the Duncan Lift. In order to keep growing, the company is presented with a couple options to increase its market share in the scissor type vehicle hoist market. One option is to expand in the U.S. market by convincing the wholesaler that handles selling the Duncan Lift to push it to customers more or establish a sales office in New York to increase sales. The other option to consider is to enter into the European Market. This could be accomplished by entering into a licensing agreement with Bar Maisse, a French company that specializes in wheel-alignment products. Duncan Industries also could consider entering into a joint-venture with Bar Maisse where profits and investment would be split 50-50. Another way to enter the European Union market would be to establish a manufacturing facility and marketing team in Germany to sell the Duncan Lift.…
