Arguments Against Standardized Testing
Reflection:
When the topic of standardized testing arises are there typically two types of people. Those who are for standardized testing and those who are against standardized testing. In this article it talks about how both sides affect the minority races. On one hand Sonja Brookins Santelises states that standardized tests can benefit from these tests. She goes on to saying these tests gives parents a way to view if their children are not being served well by the teachers and the school district. I am personally not for standardized testing, but I like the point that Sonja made. It is the first point of view from an opposite opinion of mine that I can agree with. There are students who are struggling to keep up with the curriculum being taught. One time I was observing and they were doing a spelling test over homophones. A boy stopped the teacher and asked her to repeat the context too was used. The teacher yelled at him and told him he was not paying attention. She sent him out of the room. The boy, in my opinion, had ADHD(attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) symptoms. He constantly moved, got easily distracted, had to sit by himself, and kept asking for the teacher to repeat the words. I feel like this is a prime example of what Sonja Brookins Santelises was trying to say. There is no way of telling whether or not a child is being taught or just looked over. This child will forever have trouble with homophones because when he was confused and asked a question he was rejected and publicly humiliated in front of his peers. So when the standardized reading test rolls around and the student fails the test the parents and student can go back to the test and use it as proof that his teacher did help him advance with his reading
