An argumentative essay on why we should conserve our environment and what good it could bring us
Why should we conserve plants and animals?

I am arguing for conserving plants and animals. I will discuss how plants and animals have an impact on our lives and how this would be dramatically changed if they weren't conserved.

The word "conserve" means preservation, especially of the natural environment. In plants and animals case, it means,

To keep in existence, to retain and to keep safe from harm or loss.1

Thousands of plant and animal species are being terminated every year due to many factors such as: removal of habitat, food reduction, human threats etc. From the 1700's to the year 2000, the number of species that have become extinct each year has soared from only 1 to 50,000. For example, the Mauritius dodo was extinct by 1690, Stellar's sea cow by 1768 and the Great Auk by 1844. In 1990, there was only one of the Abingdon tortoises left in the world, and in 1952, the Balinese tiger became extinct. As the graph provided in the appendix 1 shows, the number of species becoming extinct as the years go on has increased dramatically in the last 30 years. By the year 2025 the Earth could lose as many as one fifth of all species known to exist today. In recent centuries, hundreds of species have disappeared, almost always as a result of human activities. The passenger pigeon, one familiar example, was a source of food until excessive hunting and habitat loss caused its extinction in 1914. The North American bison, whose populations were decimated by settlers and market hunters in the 1800s, came close to sharing the same fate. Bison survive today only because of the efforts of early conservationists.

Food chains also play a part in the web of life.

Food-chain, a series of organisms each dependant on the next as a source of food.2

Every living organism on this earth is dependant on another. Humans rely on farm animals such as pigs, cows, sheep and chicken, as well as many other mammals. Animals such as leopards kill gazelle and zebra so they can feed. These

Extinction and evolution are a normal part of the life cycle on Earth. Of all the species that ever have lived on the earth only between one and six percent exist today (Shiva et al, 1991, 15). Many mass extinctions have previously occurred killing of as much as 90% of life on earth in one fell swoop. In 1995 there were 26,106 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes invertebrates and plant that were considered endangered, vulnerable rare or indeterminate, (Watson, 1995, 26), that figure is certainly higher today. Conservation biologists warn that 25 percent of all species could become extinct during the next twenty to thirty years (Shiva et al, 1991, 15).…

Humans, animals and plants have a great relationship with each other, they need each other, and they make each other’s lives better. Without plants and animals, human won’t be able to survive or can not live till now because humans need plants and animals to feed themselves. On the other hand, plants aren’t able to grow, too because they need to be taken care by humans. Therefore, human should protect both animals and plants. But human couldn’t take good care of animals, most of the animals in the forests are extinct because of human acts, they kill those animals carelessly for their own needs. Although, humans also do animal science to help them from terrible sickness and their strange behavior.…

When we hear of extinction, most of us think of the dilemma of the rhino, tiger, panda or blue whale; however these are only small pieces of the extinction puzzle. The overall numbers are terrifying. Of the 40,168 species that the 10,000 scientists in the World Conservation Union have assessed, one in four mammals, one in eight birds, one in three amphibians, one in three conifers and other gymnosperms are at risk of extinction. The peril faced by other classes of organisms is less thoroughly analyzed, but fully 40 per cent of the examined species of planet earth are in danger, including perhaps 51 per cent of reptiles, 52 per cent of insects, and 73 per cent of flowering plants.…

What is going to happen to the wild animals if we continue eliminating them at this rate? They will become victims of animal endangerment. What is animal endangerment? Endangerment of an animal means that the animal species is close to extinction. When discussing the causes of endangerment, it is important to under stand that individual species are not the only factors involved in this dilemma. Although some measures are being taken to help specific causes of endangerment, the universal problem that cannot be solved until humans protect the natural habitat where endangered species dwell. Our planet is constantly changing, causing habitats to be altered and modified. Natural changes tend to occur at a gradual pace usually causing only a light impact on individual species. However, when changes occur at a fast pace, there is little to no time for an individual species to react and adjust to new circumstances. This can create disastrous results, and for this reason, rapid habitat loss is the second most primary cause of species endangerment. The strongest forces in rapid habitat loss are human beings. Nearly every region of the earth has been affected by human activity, particularly during this past century.…

Extinction of Species • Every 20 minutes, the world adds another 3,500 human lives but loses one or more entire species of animal or plant life - at least 27,000 species per year. (Source: PBS) • At the present rates of extinction, as many as 20% of the world's 7-15 million species could be gone in the next 30 years. This rate of extinction has been unprecedented since the disappearance of dinosaurs 65 million years ago (Source: WWF). Habitat Destruction (Source: Animal Alliance, unless stated otherwise) • Human population reached 1 billion by 1800. Over 6 billion by 2000. Conservative estimates predict that our population will reach 9 billion people by 2050 (Source: Population Reference Bureau). • The hourly destruction of an estimated 240 acres of natural habitat is directly attributable to the growth in human populations. • 80% of the decline in biological diversity is caused by habitat destruction. Plight of Rhinos (Source: International Rhino Foundation) • Of the dozens of species of rhino that once roamed the earth, only 5 now exist. • Where there were once over 100,000 black rhinos on the plains of Africa, there are now only 2,707 on the entire continent. • The staggering decimation of the rhino population is due to poaching, to satisfy the demand for the horn for use in Eastern traditional medicines and as dagger handles. • Prices up to US$40,000 a kilo have been recorded for the much prized rhino horn - more than 5 times the price of gold. The African Elephant (Source: CITES) • 5 -10 million African elephants existed in 1930. Less than 1% of that number (approximately 600,000) remained when they were added to the international list of the most endangered species in 1989. • Demand for ivory combined with loss of habitat from human settlement led to these huge declines in population. African Wild Dog (Source: American Museum of Natural History) • Listed as one of the worlds most endangered canids, and the most endangered…
