Since its beginning over a century ago, basketball has evolved from a simple form of exercise with only a few rules to a highly competitive and complex national sport. Basketball was invented by James Naismith at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1891 (Fox 11-13). It began as an activity for the “‘ball-game’ void” months of winter (Hanson 65), and Naismith had five standards for the game. He wanted a ball that could be handled by a player’s hands; no one was to run with the ball, and anyone could grab the ball from another player as long as the ball was in play. There was to be no personal contact, and the goal was to be raised from the ground. He created the idea and standards for basketball by combining certain aspects of American…

The University of Connecticut’s Women’s Basketball team has become an icon for collegiate women’s basketball, and collegiate women’s sports in general. Since Geno Auriemma became head coach in 1994, the team has won eleven national championships, including the ones from the last four years. They won eleven in twenty-one years. The women’s basketball team has the record for most consecutive wins in college basketball, with ninety wins. They have won over twenty regular season championships. Still, the tickets to see this legendary team play cost less than tickets to see a pretty good, but not iconic, UCONN Men’s Basketball team play.…

Are you a college football fan? If not you’re just like me, I could care less about any form of football. Even though I’m not a fan of football the Pennsylvania State University scandal caught my attention. In 2011 former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was charged with 52 counts of child molestation with at least eight different young boys. Even though Sandusky was retired in 2011 he still had an office on campus because he funded the Second Mile program, a nonprofit charity that helps underprivileged youth; the program was where Jerry got most of his victims. In June of 2012 Jerry Sandusky was arrested and eventually sentenced to 30-60 years in prison. Investigators said that the molestation started in 1994 and ended in 2009. The president of Penn State, Graham Spainer and head football coach Joe Paterno were fired because they knew what…

Although this does pose a great argument, the fact of the matter is that these student-athletes are not getting what they deserve as they devote the same amount of time a full-time worker applies to their job. In order to call them a “professional” is if they were making a full salary, these students do not need a full salary, they just need a little extra to help them get buy and to insure safety if they lose their scholarship. Ryan Riddle, former professional American Arena football defensive end who was drafted by the Oakland Raiders, discusses the difference between college and professional…

Football is a very fun sport that invalves tackling, pushing, and hitting. Most of the time football is fun just from playing ruff (tackling, pushing, hitting). Kids who play football are always to play games like bull in the ring and oklahoma drills which are very contact drills, and so is football. Now, coaches are thinking about having a limited number of hits in practice. But most players disagree with that statement because football is all about hitting. If they use limited number of hits, then they will take away the fun out of football.…
