The Woman Card
“We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls – you can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful but not too successful, otherwise you will threaten the man” - Chamamanda Ngozi Adichie. Adichie’s quote is a prime example of how women are taught that it’s normal for a man to be superior in all aspects. Women shouldn’t be conforming their aspirations and goals in life to fit with that of the man. As for Donald Trump, he believes that being a woman definitely has its benefits. “If Hillary Clinton were a man, I don’t think she’d get 5 percent of the vote,” Trump remarked in a debate. A very good example where pink tax is demonstrated is with haircuts, dry cleaning and razors. Even if it’s just a simple change of razor color, from blue to pink, women are charged 13% more for the same exact razor that does the same exact job (Taylor, 2016). According to Clare Sebastian’s article, “Why Women Pay More Than Men for the Same Stuff,” she states that the women’s version of the similar products can sometimes cost up to 50% more than men’s. A study in the 90’s also revealed that on an annual cost, women spend $1,300 more each year for the same products that men purchase. But, what the woman card does get you is a tight knit bond with those of the same gender. You get to have the central support of other females, and talk about practically everything with them. It’s like having someone who knows exactly what you’re thinking, and how you’re feeling. The connection two women have with each other is beautiful because we all go through the same things that men don’t have to. This advantage in the woman card, has brought my favorite person into my life - my best
