Do you think cheer is a sport? The argument of cheer either being a sport or not being a sport has been up in the air for years. This argument almost always ends up with someone getting upset. Here are some facts that might change your opinion, they also might help you the next time this argument comes up.…
Rick Reilly begins his article by attempting to make people think cheerleading is one of the most dangerous sports that high school’s offer. He backs this idea through the concepts of logos. He uses a report by The Physician and Sportsmedicine to back his point that cheerleading is dangerous. This was a good use of authority. Rick Reilly follows this up with an assertion that cheerleading is more dangerous than football (100). This start was a good way to…
While working on this project I had a very difficult time coming up with a topic and writing the rough draft without using research. After changing my topic about three times, I decided to go with, should cheerleading be considered a sport. I’ve done cheerleading for five years now and every time I tell people that I cheer their response is cheerleading is not a sport. The point of this no research paper is to inform people the different reasons why cheerleading is a sport. While writing this paper I had some difficulties throughout the process of this paper.…
By definition, cheerleading is a sport involving the performance of organized cheering, chanting, and dancing in support of a sports team at games. To me cheerleading isn’t just a sport, it’s a lifestyle. It takes more than just cheering on the football team during Friday night games. It is a lot of hard work and dedication. When competition season starts, my life revolves around cheer.…
Cheerleading can be a dangerous sport if you don't follow the proper rules and it is important to know what you are doing someone gets injured. If you try to do a stunt that is difficult you need to have the proper practice and training. Cheerleading can be a safe sport only if you have done it correctly.…
When a person thinks of the word ‘sport’ their minds go to the big three: baseball, basketball, and football. Webster’s dictionary defines a sport as “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” Most activities are either a sport or they are not. It’s simple, but there is one that tends to confuse people, cheerleading. People cannot agree on whether cheerleading takes on the task of being a sport. A reason some people may not know might be a result of them not understanding cheer.…
I’m not saying that danger should define something as a sport, but, when deciding whether or not something is a sport danger should be a factor. Another item to think about when deciding if cheerleading should be a sport or not, is to think about what activities are already considered sports. Chess, poker, and bowling are considered sports and they take very little physical prowess. Someone doesn’t even need legs to play chess or poker. Bowling only takes being able to actually pick up the ball and throw it down the lane. One other “sport” that I think doesn’t deserve its label as a sport is curling. Curling is an Olympic sport where someone slides a stone down a lane of ice and his or her team members try the sweep the ice in front of the stone with a broom. All of these activities are fun, but I don’t think they should be considered sports. I feel if stone gliding is considered an Olympic sport, then doing aerial flips, cheering, and tossing people in the air should definitely…
Competition cheer is one type of cheerleading. It is usually associated with a gym that teaches tumbling, gymnastics, and cheerleading all in one. Most of the squads have more than one coach such as a tumbling coach, a stunting coach, and a choreographer. Competition cheerleaders have one main objective which is to compete. Since they are competing, the squad must be dedicated to practicing and performing. The cheerleaders do not cheer for other sports such as basketball or football like in high school. They also do not use offense or defense cheers, but they use “competition cheers” instead. Just like being in other sports in school, you must try out to be on the team. Competition tryouts are a lot harder than in high school. You must go through…
According to a website called ListVerse, cheerleading is ranked top 5 on the list of the most dangerous sports. The website continues to say that cheerleading is the most injury-prone sport in the world for women, with 20,000 reported injuries a year. Because of all the injuries due to cheerleading, it should be considered a sport. Many different injuries can occur, just like any other sport. Common injuries include broken legs and spinal injuries. In 2010, ABC News' "Nightline" raised the question to if cheerleading is the most dangerous sport in the nation. (Gutgold). Not only are news programs asking the question is cheerleading a sport, but they are asking if it's the most dangerous sport in the nation. Girls and boys who compete in cheerleading perform difficult stunts and tumbling passes where the cheerleader is risking getting injured anytime. Tumbling and stunting can lead to high risk of head injuries, such as concussions, or neck injuries. (Gutgold). These athletes take risk of injury every game, practice, and competition, just like any other athlete. The dangers of cheerleading is just one reason why it should be named a sport.…
Cheerleading is a dangerous activity. The main objective is for young girls not go into a competitive squad because they could get very hurt and have no time to themselves. Cheerleaders from 1A universities and competition squads have done surveys and tests to see basic information such as how much time is used for practices, ways the cheerleaders get hurt, types of injuries, location, and injury frequency Research has shown that over 50% of all catastrophic injuries in women’s sports alone has been caused by cheerleading. Guidelines and policy should be stricter to the guidelines of injuries just as if cheerleading was any other sport.…
No matter what kind of day I have had or what day it is, cheerfulness and excitement springs up and carries me during, before and after the games. My passion for dance has also allowed me to create many choreographies for my school, such as a dance routine for our school’s panther pride theme song, football and basketball cheers, and chants, and entertainment performances during games’ timeouts. Many people fail to realize the true purpose and beauty behind cheering for it revolves around the art of choreography. My viewpoint of cheerleading goes beyond the fancy bow, the shell crop top, the socks, the skirt, and the tennis shoes. As I move with much enthusiasm and avidity, I become the uniform. Even though cheering has been something I have done for ten years of my life, I challenge myself to become a better cheerleader every…
“You are not an athlete.” Tanya said. “You do nothing, except stand around on the sidelines half-cheering.” Jaqueline added. “That’s not true! Us cheerleaders are NOT some rec team. We are all-star cheerleaders. There’s a difference. We put in hundreds of hours of work we put into a two and a half minute routine.” I fired back. “Whatever.” Tanya said and walked away with Jaqueline snickering next to her. The activity of cheerleading should be a sport for many reasons. It has many risks, and requires rigorous training. Over 1.5 million people all over the world participate in cheerleading, and that is just all-star. Cheerleading should be considered a sport.…
Even though some people say that gaming is just a hobby, competitive players play with just as much intensity as any other sport. a lot of pro gamers make more than enough to live on their own. Gaming is a very interesting subject when it is discussed as a sport. I think gaming should be a sport, because they get paid like any other sport…
Cheerleading is a physical activity that I think most are aware of. Some qualify it as a sport which should receive the same notoriety as an even more familiar game such as basketball. Jennie Yabroff belongs to that community. There are also those who dismiss it as mindless women dancing for their health. I myself at one point in my life doubted the aspects of cheering and didn’t qualify it as a legitimate sport. I have grown out of that stubborn mindset and held cheering to the same standards as other sports. Jennie Yarbroff has something to say to the sport of cheering doubters and she defends the sport throughout her essay.…
Most people think cheerleading is a bunch of girls and guys dancing and throwing girls in the air. Although that’s what it seems like, there are more than that, there are stunts, tumbling, chants, dances, and skills. A sport is an activity including physical, mental, and skill. Cheerleading needs physical, mental, skill, memory, and flexibility. Cheerleading is a sport because it takes time and dedication. Therefore cheerleading is considered a sport and will be in the 2020 Olympics. There are national cheerleading competitions all the time in different places all around the United States, and cheerleaders take their own time, money, dedication, and teamwork towards the sport. Some may say cheerleading isn’t a sport because it doesn’t…
