Are You Ready Boots?
Are You Ready, Boots?

Maggie Alderson’s short story,”Are You Ready, Boots?” revolves around the life of a girl called Lulu. On a four day trip to New York, with her friends Betty and Spencer, she buys a perfect pair of boots. They make her feel like a star. However, when she returns home to London, she does not wear, or even look at her brand new, 50% off Manolos, for six months.
On the night of the grand opening of a restaurant, she is talked into wearing her “new” boots by Spencer. This is where she meets her soon-to-be boyfriend, Charlie March-Edwards. He is the stereotypical knight in shiny armour; handsome, has a great job and he even rides a Porsche. At first things are great, but little by little, Lulu begins to think of him as boring. However, when he proposes, she melts at the sight of the grand diamond, and swiftly agrees. However, when Charlie tells her that he thinks that her Manolos are awful, she puts on her boots and start walking. The boots fits her more than Charlie could ever do.

Lulu is the female protagonist and the first person narrator of the story. She is probably between 20 and 30 years old, since she is old enough to get married, but young enough to go to clubs and bars and get drunk with her friends. She is a young woman who does not miss anything in life, even though she is not directly wealthy. She has money to spend on expensive boots, French manicures and she drinks champagne when she’s goes out. However she is still ashamed of the price of the boots, and very impressed by Charlie’s Porsche. That shows that she likes being able to afford things, likes the feeling of being able to support her. It might also be the reason why she buys the expensive boots in the first place. She cares about her appearance and is willing to spend a lot of money on it. In that way she is superficial and cares a lot about looks and social status. Even when she starts noticing tiny “faults” about Charlie, she ignores them because she thinks that

Through mud, grass, manure, and more my cowgirl boots tell the story of a girl named Jessica Bronner. The turquoise stitching that runs up and down the sides of the boot fade to a brown as they reach the bottom from the many mud-wars and dirt they’ve encountered. Her favorite color, turquoise, lines inside walls like crystal blue waters. The inner calf is rubbed and worn from the countless hours brushing against the inside of her pant leg and saddle. Water-stains line the bottom of each sole from puddle jumping and late nights in the wet grass. Beat up and scratched are the toes; from kicking rocks, horse hooves, and rowdy games. The heals are chipped and tattered from dancing on old dirt roads and barn floors. Flipping and spinning, whirling…

"I'm wearing the new dress, pink and white with stripes, and new underclothes and socks and the old saddle shoes I wear to school, brown and white, the kind I get every September because they last long, and they do. My feet scuffed and round, and the heels all crooked that look dumb with this dress", says Esperanza while at her cousin's baptism party, where all she can think of is how horrible she looks (47). Esperanza has all new clothes, but the only thing she explains in detail is her shoes. To her, her shoes mean everything to her, she has everything new on, and she looks beautiful, but if she still has her everyday shoes on which brings down the whole outfit because it's not everyday that she gets to go to a party, and because she has her old shoes on she…

An interesting point is spotlighted in the novel as Lola continues to write in her diary. Faced with the possibility of homelessness and death, the characters come to realize that, in order to survive, they might need to have flexible morals and a loose representation of the humanity that used to be the norm in a society long gone. Humanity does not always translate into survival, as many subjects of novels past have discovered, and sometimes a person needs to stoop low just take make…

I am happy to make the journey downstairs, as I am tired after the day and ready to head to bed early. Abigael stops in front of the mirror one more time as she reaches into her back pocket, grabs the gentleman’s number, and smiles as she looks at the piece of paper. She then looks down at me and says, “Glad I had my lucky boots on today.” It is in that moment that I realize what I am. I am Abigael’s lucky, sassy pair of boots. I may not be a tall, tan pair of leather cowboy boots, but I am short, black, made of slick leather, and have plenty of sass with my three-inch heel. It all makes sense now; why Abigael always walks a little taller in me, why she wears me so often, and why she always walks with just a little more pep in her step while wearing me. I feel content as Abigael slides me off and returns me to the floor of her closet. I will no longer feel inferior to those taller boots, now I feel nothing but pride and will sleep peacefully knowing that I am wanted. Today has been a great day because now I know exactly what I am; lucky and…

The setting of Fifth Avenue in New York, NY, is a key element in the story. Fifth Avenue is not just lined with high priced stores, it 's world famous for shopping; A perfect setting for two chauvinistic characters such as Midge and Annabel. Not only is Fifth Avenue one of the most expensive places to shop, but it has glamor and fame attached to it. Its not just the best, it is the best of the best, which is of course what rich people expect. Despite having poverty ridden life, the girls put an astounding amount of emphasis on trying to look rich. They eat the food that a wealthy person would eat, but the cheap knock of version. With todays society valuing money above almost everything else, people who have it (or like to pretend they have it) will sometimes develop an inflated sense of entitlement. The girls feel entitled to treat others as inferior people, whether they be walking with their noses in the air, or going through men faster than socks. The $250 000 emerald and pearl necklace is another key element. The necklace was glamorous. It was something that would definitely lead people to believe that they were better than them. When they entered the store to investigate, they were proud, arrogant, and discerning, just like 'rich ' people are of course. When they found out the price of the necklace, they not only just about 'lost their cool ' but even their imaginary selves would have…
