Are Online News Sources Causing Newspapers to Become Obsolete?
Abstract Whispers have turned into studies. Studies have turned into data. The data makes clear that the future of hard copy newspapers is questionable at best. But to see how much longer newspapers can hold on before giving way to a strict, online format, the two researchers assembled a 10-question survey, to gauge the early 2014 priorities of those that depend on newspapers (in either online or print formats) for their information. It was determined that the data collected in this survey supports the belief that online newspapers are eventually going to take over as the main, if not the only, source of news for subscribers. The data collected in this survey also points to the fact that hard copy newspapers have only a little time left to be a resource for information.
Research Question: Are online news sources causing newspapers to become obsolete?
As technology continually evolves, so do people’s preferences. For the purpose of this research, we will focus on the preferences of news subscribers. The research question is posed to gain a better understanding of the current state of the newspaper industry and to see where the future may lie considering the possibilities of more change in the future.
Literature Review
Like newspapers and other types of companies that were forced to reinvent, there are always other options on the table. (Goldstein,Allison, 2012). Being innovative and not remaining stagnant is crucial to staying relevant. News organizations are taking to social media sites like Twitter and Facebook as a portal to attract audiences to their websites, a way of engaging with audiences and a platform to promote work (McEnnis,Simon, 2013). Many newspapers are also creating “user-generated” websites to help spread the word about their product, through users that contribute to the site (Ots/Karlsson, 2012).
