In the text, the author says, “Devon, 13, says that not long ago, a friend lashed out at her in a Facebook post.” Kids and adults say things online that are much different from what they would say face-to-face. Also, in the text, Devon said, “ I guess because I wasn’t right there, he just let it all out.” People have the nerve to say things that are mean online because they aren’t looking at the person face-to-face.…

Individuals shouldn’t be prosecuted for statements made on social media. One reason I think that is because doing so would be a direct violation of our first amendment rights. It also only affects two people making it a waste of time as it doesn’t affect many people. The ability to prosecute someone for an offense like this would be unlawful and a waste of taxpayer’s money. Cyberbullying is a crime that can be prevented by simply logging off but most people don’t do that.…

"There is another side to this story, and that is that kids are getting a lot of social support through social media," said Campbell (WebMD). The invention of the internet only made the explosion of information even faster. Teenagers put in on a blog, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram among others about anything, and have the information spread as fast as split seconds. This is how cyberbullying came up. “Cyberbullying is an increasing epidemic in our society and we, Americans can no longer wait a law to be a cure. A review of cyberbullying issues in light of American laws illustrates that the Supreme Court has been hesitant to approve law that will erode our Freedom of Speech rights” (McManimon). Cyberbullying is defined as a young person tormenting, threatening, harassing, or embarrassing another young person using the internet of other technologies, like cellphones, computers or etc. “Cyberbullying can lead to suicide. We are familiar with the stories about children and teenagers driven to desperate even suicidal acts after having been exposed to repeated harassment in cyberspace” (Foxman). Although cyberbullying is the broader term applied to suicides caused by cruel comments online, the more specific term would more often than not be suicide baiting, which is exactly what it sounds like: taunting and coercing and pushing someone into suicide. In her article “Twitter Trolls and the Refusal to Be Silenced,” Myisha Cherry provides one of the most classic example of a suicide bait message – “‘kill yourself before I do’” (Cherry 222). Suicide baiting is a disappointingly frequent occurrence and the current preventative measures that are in place aren’t…
