The cockroach Archy in the “Lesson of the Moth” has a certain opinion on the purpose of life. He believes in the poem that the purpose of life is to have some happiness, to live a long life, and to use your common sense. Through the poem Archy has a conversation with a moth and they tell each other about what they believe the purpose of life is. This showed that Archy’s prospective on life is very different from the moths. In the poem the lesson of the moth Archy the cockroach believes that one of the purposes of life is to have some happiness in it. For example, in paragraph five of the poem archy states “I would rather have half the happiness and twice the longevity”. This shows that archy still wants happiness but he does not want it as

She had accidentally come across Fela's shrine to the girls one Friday in the shed behind the house. She had ordered Fela to move the shrine, but Minou scolded her for being intolerant. Minou often stops at the shrine, which is now down the street. She asks Dede where Lio Morales now lives, since Minerva has asked her to deliver a message to him—just to say hello, and to state how much she thinks of him. When the interview woman presses on, asking Dede, "When did all the problems start?" Dede begins to speak about Lio Morales. She met him one "hot and humid afternoon" while she was organizing her father's shop with Minerva. They are finishing up before they head to Tio Pepe's to play volleyball with their friends. Dede knows that her cousin Jaimito, on whom she has started to have a crush (even though he once annoyed her), will be there. Mario, one of their distributors, arrives with Lio, and introduces him as his cousin. He knows Elsa Sanchez and Sinita Perozo from the university. When Dede mentions that they are committed to playing volleyball, Minerva invites Mario and Lio. Minerva gets their father's permission, and the girls go to Tio Pepe's with Mario and Lio.A few weeks later, Lio is still joining them for volleyball. Jaimito suggests that the girls come to play. As they take off their shoes and begin to assign positions, Dede notices that Minerva and Lio are missing. She is unsure if it is actually an accident, but she hits the ball into the hedges, startling the hiding couple. Once Lio emerges from the hedges, Jaimito starts a fight with him, and the game ends in awkwardness. Lio and Jaimito both begin to come to the Mirabals house more and more.     The main point of Julia Alvarez's "In the Time of the Butterflies" is to show individual personality in each character. This book shows that the people involved in the revolution led personal lives and had feelings just like those of us who read about them. By telling about the characters' families and personal issues, Alvarez draws her readers into the book and makes them feel for each character. Something that puzzled me was why the Mirabal sisters refused to leave prison. Minerva said that they had to set a good example and that accepting a pardon would mean that they thought they had something to be pardoned for. It seems to me that Minerva had too much pride. They should have accepted the pardon for the sake of their children and their mother. Did they really want their children to grow up without them? I see that they were trying to prove a point, but it also seems that they were working against themselves at the same time. They could not further the revolution while they were sitting in jail. I also wondered why Trujillo all of the sudden started killing people left and right. I concluded that he was desperate because he knew he was not going to have that much power for very long. He knew he was in trouble because the OAS Peace Committee came so he figured he might as well kill people while he still can. I don't understand why Mate did not tell the OAS Peace Committee what happened at La 40. She said she did not want to endanger Santiclo. That is understandable, but it seems that there was a very slim possibility that he would get in trouble. She should have been thinking of her own good as well as her fellow prisoners'. It was interesting how much the Mirabal sisters' true personalities came out while they were in prison. Mate was weak. She had a lot of breakdowns and relied on Minerva for support.     Woolf’s tone seen throughout her piece is pity and futility. This is seen and solidified in paragraph 2 when the speaker pities the moth for being a moth on a day where so much joy and wonder is possible for other living things. She sees the moth’s actions as futile as it zigzags back and forth between the two sills. She begins to relate with the moth in this way that life seems futile. Petrunkevitch uses a tone that is personal while at the same time staying professional. This tone is similar to that of Woolf in the way that although Woolf’s written perspective doesn’t suggest that she is connecting to the moth she does actually solidly say that she is interested in its actions and is “roused” by its attitude.     Without reason, humans cannot fully grasp the ideas of time, life, and death, and uncertainty prevails. The remaining stanzas become very philosophical. The use of of the word “hieroglyphics” highlights the uncertainty, as it is an ancient and complex form of writing that is very hard to learn. In these hieroglyphics, however, the bat possesses ancient “wisdom”, which holds the truths the speaker wishes to learn of time, life, and death. These lines suggest that time is a complex subject and it is not likely that humanity will ever be able to fully understand it. In addition, the speaker points out that “if there were no wind we might, we think, hear the earth grind on its axis, or history drip in darkness like a leaking pipe in the cellar”. The imagery of the dripping pipe here works to show that time is slowly, but surely passing us by, and since it is only “dripping” and in a cellar, it is hard to notice unless the movement of the wind and the earth cease.     In the poem “The Lesson of the Moth” writer Don Marquis compares two different lifestyles through a free spirited moth and a logical thinking human. The moth states that it is better to be a part of beauty and excitement for one instant and then cease to exist forever and never be a part of beauty. I agree with the moth because I would much rather live a shorter life appreciating and experiencing a better connection to God’s creation and gaining a better understanding of the creator, then to have a long boring life of just sitting on the side.
