Archetypes In Beowulf Essay
The Roles of Mythological/Archetypal Characters In the famous epic poem entitled Beowulf, there are numerous roles that define the importance of archetypal characters. Heros, according to the Anglo-Saxons, were known to be powerful and courageous and were viewed as individuals who went above the normal standards in order to assist others. Another important archetypal character is known as the outcast, which is an individual who stays confined to themselves. Many characters fit the role as an outcast or hero. However, as the poem continues, there are many surprises that can lead the reader to different conclusions. The epic poem Beowulf also uses many symbols to symbolize different characteristics of a hero or an outcast.

Grendel’s mother only comes out of her underground lair when she hears about the death of her beloved son. She kills one of Hrothgar’s most treasured warriors, thus, putting a target on herself for revenge. While mourning over the loss of her beloved son, Beowulf is seeking revenge after the death of Aeschere. Grendel’s mother can be considered an outcast due to her choice of only coming out of her lair to seek revenge after the death of Grendel. She lives in a lair which lies in the bottom of the water, hidden away from the happiness and chaos of society. Thus, leading the readers to define her as one of the possible outcasts in the poem. Many characters in the epic poem Beowulf, can relate and show qualities and characteristics of being an outcast. Towards the end of the poem Beowulf is asked to help defeat the great dragon. The cave where the dragon lives can be one of many symbols used symbolize the dragon’s isolation from society. Isolated from society, the dragon lives in his own cave surrounded by a substantial amount of gold, silver, and treasures of numerous variations. The blood of the dragon is known to be poisonous and harmful, thus, killing Beowulf as the dragon lunged his teeth into Beowulf’s

    The setting of the battle against Grendel’s mother and the battle against the Dragon, in the movie detracts from my understanding of the poem. When Beowulf went to face Grendel’s mother in the poem, the lair was described as a place where even a “deer hunted through the woods by a pack of hounds, a stag with great horns…prefers to die on those shores.”(Beowulf 433) instead of going into the lake. Alternatively the movie depicts the lair as a difficult place to reach, but not impossible, it appears to be less scary than that of the poem.
